For almost five straight years, Kairi had been the epitome of a goody-two-shoes. Always on time to class, always in bed before curfew, never sneaking around to anyplace off-limits.

Lately, she had started to rethink this strategy. Sneaking out every once in a while wasn't such a bad thing, was it? Having been here so long and having missed out on some of the things her close friends had dared to do made her feel left out. And now, most of those friends were gone... and she was still here, left out, wondering how being good all the time had really benefited her ( ... )

He hadn't been waiting long, but he was getting the heebie jeebies waiting around for her. He was certain there would be a teacher or someone to catch them. There hadn't been an incident yet and he was grateful.

He smiled at her when she finally emerged. "Ready?" he mumbled. Times like these, he wished he was better at casting spells. He was beginning to learn a few of them better thanks to her tutelage; he still had a lot to learn. A mute spell would have come in real handy about now.

He headed down the hallway, keeping an eye out for any teachers or staff. He breathed a small sigh of relief as they made it outside. One hurdle down.

"When you are," She replied with a grin.

Kairi was getting much better at sneaking around. She still wasn't the best at it, but she had Jayne to pull her to the side in case she was being too loud or he saw someone coming. So they made it to the Astronomy Tower without too much worry, getting lucky enough not to run into any patrolling professors.

"Have you been practicing the spells we went over yesterday?" She whispered, as they started to ascend the steps.

It was a clear night, luckily enough. There were enough cloudy days he was worried they wouldn't have a clear view of the sky. If they couldn't see the stars, he was certain it would have been much more difficult to persuade her up here. All this spending time together was something quite pleasing to him. Plus, she wasn't bad looking at all. He thought this plan was his best to date.

At her question, he grimaced. He'd practiced, all right. Just didn't get any decent results. He was pretty sure his wand was conspiring against him. his beloved Vera would never do this to him. Maybe he should have named his wand something other than 'Vera, too.' It was giving his gun a bad name.

"Yeah, kinda. They just don't always want to turn out right. I don't get it," he mumbled as they went up the steps. They were probably mostly in the clear by now. He still didn't want to risk getting caught before they reached their destination.

She definitely wanted to see the stars. She was harboring some small, unspoken hope that just seeing the stars up close and clearly would somehow make this new loneliness vanish. Logically, she knew it didn't work like that, but her heart was holding out hope for the otherwise.

"You just gotta keep at it," She told him, confidently. "If you keep practicing, it'll get smoother." If he had told her it was his wand that was bothering him, she might've loaned him hers, just to see if it made a difference. Hers was also a hand-me-down, but it was attuned rather well to her and worked well enough.

He decided to ignore her statement about wands. They were almost there and he was sick of talking about school. He already lived there, he didn't want to have to think about it all the time.

He breathed a sigh of relief as they finally made it up to the top. Jayne wanted to know why there had to be so many stairs. He wasn't against physical activity, but it seemed rather pointless. Guess he should start working on how to better use his broom.

He turned around to give Kairi a glance. He really hoped she liked it up here. Part of it was he wanted to show her something nice. And the other part. Well a growing man had needs. "Well, what do you think?" he asked, his voice slightly lower than normal.

Kairi stepped away from the last step slowly, looking up. The stars glittered across a blanket of black velvet, quiet and immense. Stopping, she could only stare upwards for a moment at that stillness, uncaring of the chill night air that touched her skin.

It really was better, like this. When it was so late, and so silent, and she felt so much closer than she did on the ground. Maybe she really did need to start taking astronomy classes.

Still. The stars didn't magically make her worries vanish, although they were pretty and distracting to look at. She smiled, but there was a somber haunt to her tone. "It's really beautiful."

He was quite pleased with himself he had picked a good spot to show her. He didn't know much about stars. They were there and they were shiny. He could pick out the North star like a champion and that was about it. He didn't think there was anything else to know.

"Do you know any of them shapes they make up?" he asked her, trying to gauge her interest.

"Um, well..." She stared up at the twinkling lights, thinking. After a moment, she lifted her hand and pointed straight up. "That's Orion's Belt-- those three stars right there, see? And that--" her pointing shifted direction slightly, "--that's the Big Dipper. Or the Little Dipper. I'm actually not to sure," She admitted sheepishly. Astronomy had always interested her, but for some reason she'd never taken the class.

Jayne glanced over at her. If she didn't know that much about stars, maybe she did want to spend some time with just him. The thought stoked his ego quite nicely. With a grin he moved closer to her. "I don't really see them. Who decided to name them that stuff anyway?"

"Lots of people, I think." Kairi did not notice Jayne's moving closer until he had bumped into her shoulder. It was silly, but suddenly, she felt a tiny bit stifled, and slipped away to stand near one of the openings along the wall.

It was a nice night. Chill, but not enough to make her move for cover. And the stars were very bright. But it wasn't doing as good a job as she'd hoped for of making her forget certain empty bunks back at Gryffindor Tower. "I bet a lot of kids come up here."

Huh, he was confused that she moved away. Maybe she was just playing hard to get? He wasn't sure. He didn't exactly have a lot of experience with women. He couldn't remember the last time he'd actually liked any enough to do anything about it. And none of them seemed all that interested in him. Who knew? It was just too much thinking for his liking.

"Yeah, probably. Wonder if they're all interested in looking at the stars, though."

Kairi's eyes were still locked on the stars, tracing invisible patterns between the ones most familiar. It was, at least, a comforting thought to think that Alma had the same stars above her right now.

"Well, it's a bit too chilly to try and do homework or anything else up here, isn't it?" What else would people come this high up into the tower for :||

Jayne was starting to get cold feet in more ways than one. He had begun to wonder if there was something else, but she didn't seem to be reciprocating any of his movements. If anything, she moved away from all of his advancements. He figured he'd give it one more shot before he gave up. Better give it his all.

"I heard they make out up here and stuff." He looked down at her with a raise of his eyebrows.

It wasn't her fault she didn't realize what Jayne's intentions were. They were just friends, and while she liked Jayne, she didn't like in him in quite that way.

So there was a very definite, very shocked blush that warmed her cheeks, as she stared up at him blankly. He couldn't actually mean... "Oh," Was all she replied, her mind scrambling for anything else to say.

Her reaction confused him. He wasn't sure if she was just that innocent or if she was into the idea of kissing him. Still, her 'Oh' didn't sound too promising. He sighed. He didn't want to push his luck too far. People tended to overreact when he did.

"Yeah, that's just what people say, I guess," he said as he leaned against the tower.
