This weekend I got to do the best performance in the world. It didn't include bright lights or microphones or amplifiers. There wasn't even a stage. There were no big crowds, no paycheck at the end, nothing like that, but it was by far the greatest performance I have ever done.
The stage was the back porch. I sat on a garden chair that was plastic and decrepit to the point of almost breaking since it's so old. It was early afternoon, there was a cool beach breeze blowing. The audience consisted of Grampa, Mom, Uncle Brian, Grama and Kevin, all sitting around on the various garden chairs. Grampa was in a special one and he had his hat on like always.
This time it was my turn to perform. I got to be the entertainer. I got to play for Grampa. I got to play some of my stuff, I played some of his stuff, I played just about everything. I sang him "Captain Jack and the Mermaid" and he teased me for it being such a long song. I sang "Blame it on the Moonlight", a song that Grampa wrote many years ago. I played "Waltzing Matilda" and "Cockles and Mussels" and then figured out how to do "Cats in the Cradle" and "Puff the Magic Dragon". Uncle Brian made me laugh because he found it amusing that I knew so many folk songs. There was lots of laughter and Grampa even sang a little bit with me playing. I got to be his accompaniment this time instead of the other way around.
It was the best show I will have ever done in my entire life.
