Musical Ramblings of a Mad Woman

Because I am apparently incapable of making a post that doesn't involve plugging myself, my friends or both*... those of you who are thinking about attending Wicked Faire (this year, or even in future years) should go join The Wicked Village.

Seriously, why are you still here?

Oh! Right. Because there are many more words in this post. Okay, but you should really go open that in another tab, or as soon as you're done reading this or something.

Friday was a very good day. I met my new bosses who were awesome and laid back and whose only comment about my hair was said in a pleasant and slightly amused tone. "Your hair matches our color palette!" I have high hopes for my future there.

After work I met up with baronmind, MJ, luguvalium, and quietdeath and went climbing. I spent most of the time belaying, rather than climbing, but that was alright because quietdeath was positively adorable. She had to leave for work around 6:30, and shortly afterward the rest of us went out for dinner at a nearby pub (an excellent way to start my new diet). After dinner it was straight to Gallery 5 to see Jason Webley!

So here's my history with Jason (so to speak). baronmind and I were driving somewhere, and I expressed some interest in a couple of songs that were included on the mix CD we were listening to. He told me a little bit about Mr. Webley, and I filed the name away in one of the dustier corners of my mind. Fast forward to my birthday, and what should baronmind get me, but Against the Night! I listened to the whole cd a few times through and enjoyed it top to bottom, but only really loved a few tracks.

I liked Jason Webley, but not on the same "OMG I want to have his musical babies" level that I feel about, say, Creature Feature, or the Dresden Dolls.

That said, after seeing him in concert, I will never miss an opportunity to do so again. He's a fantastic showman. His on-stage persona was funny and sweet and I can't wait to catch him again.

As a side note, I was poking around Wicked Village earlier today, and came across Calamity Menagerie. I saw them at Wicked Faire III, opening for Voltaire and really enjoyed them.** I popped over to their myspace page to have another listen, and lo and behold: They're playing with Jason Webley this Wednesday at 601 Main Street, Asbury Park, NJ. Doors are at 8, and you should go.

*Or, apparently, bands/musicians I really like.

**I remember checking out their music online right after Wicked Faire and finding their recorded music sadly lacking. Possibly they've gotten better recordings or possibly their recorded music has always been awesome and their live music is just extra awesome. Either way I'm resolved to buy a cd or two when I see them this year.
