Pre-2010 recs: 5 SPN gen and 1 Sam/Dean

Feb 26, 2013 22:42

So to recap: This month I am reccing fics that were written prior to 2010.

This particular post is somewhat large, because I am making up for that terrible internet connection preventing me posting these past couple of weeks. I have one more post to come (which is just about ready to go and should be up in the next few days), which will be a collection of J2 fics, again all from before 2010.

Again, I hope you get as much out of these as I did :)

Same Time Next Year, by apreludetoanend
Year: 2008
Rating, pairing and warnings: PG-13; Gen (no pairing), Pilot AU
Word Count: Unknown, but not long at all.
Summary:Pilot AU. Some things never change. When Dad goes missing, Dean comes for Sam.

This is one of those very clever fics that leave you clues and makes you gasp when the truth is revealed. You can’t help but feel the sense that something’s off throughout the whole piece, which is perfectly highlighted by apreludetoanend’s depiction of the relationship between Sam and Dean. She effortlessly embeds that I will do anything for you, even though it causes me pain thing that is signature between the brothers, which is what makes this fic so utterly heartbreaking in the end.

My Red Thoughts in a Red Shade, by smilla02
Year: 2007
Rating, pairing and warnings: PG-13; Gen (no pairing), hell imagery, religious themes, spoilers up to 3x02.
Word Count: 3,400.
Summary: One day you finally knew what you had to do.

I’m such a sucker for the Winchester’s being all codependent. This is another great example of great writing capturing the can’t/don’t want to live without you mentality the boys have. The ending, after the rest of the fic, is one of those perfect endings that sum everything up in so little words.

High Up On the Hill, by paxlux
Year: 2009
Rating, pairing and warnings: PG; Gen (no pairing), death imagery
Word Count: 1,756
Summary: The hill is high and they're still walking as if they'll never get to rest.

paxlux is one of those authors that I could recommend again and again. Her writing is beautiful, her imagery is simply astounding. I chose this piece for its uniqueness, paxlux
went experimental and postmodern so the fic isn’t a standard layout. However, it just adds to the creepy atmosphere, which basically sucks you right in. You’re left hanging between the feeling that everything is happening all at once, even though all signs are pointing to that never ending frozen moment before a big reveal.

Dangling on a String, by legoline
Year: 2008
Rating, pairing and warnings: R; Gen; violence, torture and insanity
Word Count: ~9,000.
Summary: It's been two years since Dean and Sam disappeared. When Ellen, Jo and Bobby find the brothers they're beaten, broken and perhaps, beyond hope.

This, I found out as I was trawling through my own journal recs post, was the very first fic I ever saved. And with damn good reason. Be warned it does deal with individuals who have been badly abused (all offscreen), but, like many of the other fics I’ve been reccing, is wonderfully written and captivating.

Ten thousand Miles, by mimblexwimble
Year: 2009
Rating, pairing and warnings: PG-13; Gen (no pairing), disappearance of a loved one.
Word Count: ~35,000
Summary: This isn’t a story with a deeper meaning. There is no moral at the end. On December 28th, 2007, Sam Winchester walked out of the motel room he was sharing with his brother and never came back. This is the story of what happened after.

Are you ready to cry? You betcha butt you are. I’m a little ashamed to say I haven’t read this in a while, but I can guarantee you will simultaneously love this fic and be utterly heartbroken by it. Again, mimblexwimble is an author that I could rec forever (and on a personal note I am indebted to forever, not only for writing this fic for me but helping me at the last minute with a uni assignment, despite being in a whole difference country and time zone). Anyway, this fic, you should read it. Keep the tissues handy, and don’t make any plans for later, cause you’ll probably be cancelling them just so you can curl up in a ball with this fic and love it forever.

A Bleak Understanding in Reverse, by lustmordred
Year: 2009
Rating, pairing and warnings: NC-17; Sam/Dean; Incest, language, character death
Word Count: Unsure, but it’s only in 2 parts, so it isn’t amazingly long.
Summary: It was hard to imagine that life without monsters could still kill them...

I have a type, again. I love fics that make me cry. I think it’s exceptional when an author creates something so absolutely wonderful you can’t help but become emotionally tied to it. lustmordred did this, and did this spectacularly. It is a death fic, but the path that takes us there is so full of life and feeling.
