Hello! Thank you so much to oxoniensis for inviting me to host this round of Ask the Artist. I do hope I can step up to the challenge! I've written up a bit about myself and my drawing process to start us off :)
I am also a slow and lazy artist. I overcome this by signing up for challenges with authors who I don't want to risk disappointing. YES, GUILT IS AN EXCELLENT MOTIVATOR!
I never really tried to draw the likenesses of real people until I began drawing for the Supernatural fandom, so it's been a real learning experience for me! I am really proud of you for continuing to challenge yourself and wanting to grow as an artist by using more references, not always relying on textures, and paying more attention to likenesses.
And yeah, there is a question in here somewhere... Oh yes, are you happy with your decision not to pursue an art degree? And if you had a chance to do it all over again, would you have picked the same major that you did?
Are you kidding?? You're one of the most prolific artists I know! /o\ And I totally agree with you on signing up for challenges! Guilt is the best motivator, lol XD But collaborating with someone is also so much fun :3
( ... )
Yes, an art career is not glamorous and so many insanely talented people never make it. Like you, I knew I didn't have the drive necessary to be successful, which is why I decided to get an art and media degree from a liberal arts college instead of an art school. That way, I'd still have options.
I'm glad you're satisfied with your decision. Plus, it's never too late to explore other things now that you're out of school. YOU'RE STILL SO YOUNG!
Lol unrelated but I just now realized that two of my selected works were for you XDDDD PEOPLE ARE GONNA THINK YOU OWN ME OR SOMETHING and they'd be right
I prefer drawing Sam, but I find it easier to draw Dean. Sam is my favorite character, and Jared has such a great body... for drawing. (I appreciate his body on a strictly artistic level, of course. *cough*) Jensen's features are so exaggerated that I find it easier to draw his likeness, most of the time. I'm also more used to drawing "pretty" men (not that Jared isn't pretty, but!), so full lips/long lashes are part of my style already. But I love that drawing Sam means I have to step out of my comfort zone and draw a type of body/face I'm not used to. I'm never quite happy with how I draw him, but hopefully I'll get better with practice!
I don't draw enough women! /o\ This is again just force of habit; I've always preferred drawing guys over girls since my style is more suited to hard angles (bones/muscles) and exaggerated features (big nose, strong jaw, etc.). I would like to draw the ladies of SPN at some point, or genderswapped Sam&Dean ;D
This is so interesting because I am the complete opposite. I find Sam's face much easier to draw because Jensen's features are NOT as exaggerated. I guess it's not as much of an issue for you because you don't strive for photorealism, but Jensen's face is more asymmetrical than Jared's, despite the prettiness. And it's the teeny, hard-to-capture idiosyncrasies like the hitch in his nose and the slight inward slant of his teeth that sell the likeness.
And OMG, you must draw genderswap! I'll do it if you do ;)
As for stepping outside your comfort zone, I think we should both also commit to drawing real porns. NO MORE EXCUSES /o\
Oh, thank you so much! :') I'm so glad you like it ♥
Lazy-and-slow disease is the worst, ugh T_T And chronic, unfortunately... :P I think drawing for other people is the best motivation, though :) I've always loved drawing other people's characters or giving people gift art. I get more satisfaction out of doing art for other people, I think; it's just nice to know that you're making at least one person happy with something you made, you know? :3 It's also great motivation to get stuff done, since you don't want to disappoint.
And of course, feedback/comments are the best source of encouragement! It feels kind of lame to admit it, but I think most artists would agree that we want people to like our stuff. It's not a popularity thing, it's just knowing that what you create is worth other people's consideration. I get stupidly giddy over every comment I get on my art, because it means someone took the time to not only look at it, but went the extra step to leave a comment ♥

THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE BEST PLAN EVER.

I also suffer from lazy and slow disease. What kind of bribes would work to make you more prolific?
