So very nice...

I've actually had a number of really nice things happen lately...

Last week, when I had to show up to a militia function with a rag wrapped around my head like a brain surgery patient, everyone was nice enough not to notice unless I mentioned it, and then they said it was fine.

And when I was absently commenting on my family, a Raveler posted to ask ( Read more... )

I am so glad to hear that Braveheart is using his lips more! He is a brave heart, indeed. And using his communication board is great.

So you liked War Horse?

And I would love to hear more about your reenactment group! Maybe a picture? Maybe? Are you using a commercial pattern for the gown, or did you buy one from one of the smaller companies, or did you take a commercial pattern and change things around to make it authentic, or did you... Details! Details!

And yay for the new friend!

Good things all around!

Niceness on my part. Hmm.

The drawing class is kind of fun, actually, considering that I'm quite in the dark about how to draw and my drawings look a bit doubtful.

I went to writers' group on Thursday evening and brought a discussion with me, instead of something I wrote, and it went over well! I think that, for me, discussions will become a big part of writers' group, because I can make better use of the group that way.

I bought myself a mini trampoline. Now I need to assemble it and actually use it for exercising.

I have done a bit of writing. *snicker* It's sci-fi. It's got spaceships. And true love. It's really sappy!

Spaceships AND true love? That is pretty amazing!

Have you ever read a copy of "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain?" This is IMMENSELY helpful in drawing things so they end up recognizable. Not that I've gotten that far with it...I used to have to leave class to go cry in the bathroom sometimes. And get a snack. I might not have been the only one. There might have been a reason the cafeteria was on the same floor as the drawing rooms...

I will use a specialized pattern that I bought in Williamsburg. I was asking about it on Rav and the woman who wrote it entered the conversation and has been terribly terribly nice to me! She approved my huge bargain Ikea duvet as fabric, and told me how she would correct the pattern if she were making it today. So that should be fun -but first, I have to make a set of stays...and I have gained weight...so of course I want to lose the weight before I make the stays, and....

anyway.

I have a copy of "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." Also, a lot of the stuff suggested in that book is what the drawing instructor is having us do, on very large paper.

As for the set of stays, I have a suggestion. Everybody who has made them seems to suggest making a mock-up first. So make yourself a mock-up out of cheap muslin, something tough like denim on the inside, and using plastic cable ties for the bones. Yeah, I know that denim stretches more than coutil. But you need a set of stays, and I wouldn't wait until you're some mythical size you want to be. You can make a practice set of stays, wear them until you lose weight, and then make a better set with the coutil and whatnot, and you'll already have made a bunch of the silly mistakes that we're all bound to make the first time we make something as close-fitting as stays.

I expect running horizontal lines of stitching through the denim before you turn the cut pieces into a sewn set of stays could keep some of the stretch down, rather like stay-stitching.

It's cool that the actual pattern maker is in contact with you!

Which pattern is it? I'm so nosy! I want to know!
