So the whole eastern side of Australia is being hideously drenched. The rural areas have been getting flooded for about a week now but it's finally hit the capital city. I thought it would die out. How much rain can there be? It's already covered most of the state which is saying something when the state is (yes, I googled it) 4.9 times bigger than the whole of Japan (or 2.73 times bigger than Texas if that puts it in better perspective). There can't be that much water left but they're saying that this is just the start of it and the damned thing is going to keep getting worse until at least Thursday. The death toll is at 9 and there are another 66 missing which is supposed to be fairly inaccurate thanks to the fact that most of the badly affected areas are without electricity or phone lines so people can't contact the authorities to report people missing.
Today the Brisbane River burst it's banks and flooded the CBD and all the surrounding towns are flooded up to the rooftops in most places. It's kind of scary. That being said, I live in a high area and we're not in any threat of getting flooded or cut off. But I'm worrying about my grandma, and my aunt and even my dad's house (Dad and my sister will be fine, they'll evacuate if they need to but I still worry about the house).
On the plus side I had an excuse to buy gum boots (wellingtons? galoshes? or whatever your countries call plastic, rain boots). Sadly there was only one store open that sold them (and the shop assistants were fairly shitty that they were the only ones left) so I had to pick out of some really crappy designs. But the black and brown horses are growing on me. Anything to keep dry really.
Maybe those snorkel sets that I got my mum and step-dad for Christmas wasn't completely pointless after all.
