“I heard the most awful thing,” said Ran with a cutesy forced frown. “And what’s worse is that it was about you!”
The “rumor” Ran had heard was the truth. Lum was now happily engaged to the humanoid. That meant that Rei was free for the taking. It wasn’t like Lum ever liked him that much anyhow. Ran thought it was best to be sympathetic to her childhood best friend. Lum had to be devastated. If it had been her she knew she would be. Rei was such a catch in Ran’s eyes.
“Ran!” Lum greeted her friend cheerfully. It been a while since they saw each other, she never understood why Ran had distanced herself so much, nor would she likely ever understand.
“I heard that you’re being forced to spend the rest of your life with a human,” Ran said, as if it were the most disgusting thing in the universe.
“Darling?” replied Lum unsure of what to make of Ran’s tone. “I love him. He is better than Rei.”
Lum watched in confusion as Ran face turned so red that it almost matched her hair. She was furious. Rei was, literally, as kind as a kitten, how could anyone think anyone else was better than him? Lum was the luckiest Oni to been chosen by him. What annoyed Ran the most was Lum was oblivious to how lucky she was.
Ran felt that her efforts to fix their friendship had failed. It wasn’t her fault it was Lum’s. The entire trip was a disaster. She thought about giving up and going home, but decided that maybe if she stayed she could knock some sense into Lum.
