The first term was spectacular for Maud at Cackle’s. She couldn’t wait until the second term began and she could hang out with her best friend, Mildred. But during the second term things changed, Enid transferred in and Maud’s friendship with Mildred suffered for it.
After Mildred discovered realized the distance she had inadvertently put between herself and Maud, she quickly resolved to fix it. Thus Enid, Maud and Mildred all became close friends. Mildred felt that she was being fair and had balanced her time between the two girls, so nobody would feel left out. But Maud didn’t think so.
Life outside class was wonderful, and that was when the friendship flourished. But during class, that when Maud felt out of place. It wasn’t Mildred fault. It was just how the school was set up - each class divided the girls up into pairs. Mildred rarely picked Maud to be her partner. She would always say that she didn’t want to hold Maud back. But Maud was lonely.
“Maud, do you want to be my partner?” Mildred asked.
“Sure,” Maud replied with a smile. Then she saw Enid behind Mildred. “Aren’t you already partnered to Enid?”
“Yes,” Mildred replied. “But Miss Cackles said that because there are an odd number of students today that we could work together in a group of three.”
Maud happily joined Mildred and Enid. Although it was nice to work with Mildred, it would have been nicer if she didn’t have to always share her with Enid.
