In the days long ago where my sister and I used to play in our backyard and the parklands behind my house, we somehow came across a plant that produced a berry we were allowed to eat.
I don't remember how we knew they were okay to eat, but we loved them. And we'd often go back to that plant and check for any berries.
I remember they were picked from the plant with a paper sort of sack around them that you had to peel open and they looked like an orange cherry tomato, but had a berry-ish flavour.
When I got older we didn't see them anymore. The plant we had died and disappeared and I didn't see any plants like it again. When I remembered, I did ask around and looked around for the fruit, however no-one ever knew what I was I was talking about.
Walking around Waitrose today, I finally saw them! They're called
Physalis! There was a little card on them and a bag and I bought them! They taste just as good as I remember, but a little waxier than I remember. I had to clean each one off with a towel before I could eat them. But they're still fabulous.
I love it when unanswered questions of the past are answered!
