Proof that the word is not getting out, only 2 people on my friends list made mention of the content strike in the last 24 hours.

The idea behind the strike is this: many people on LiveJournal think that SUP (the company that now owns LiveJournal) is under the impression that LiveJournal is not a content-driven site. (Whether or not that is correct is an entire other debate.) Since SUP (presumably) monitors the amount of content (posts and comments) that gets posted each day, having an entire day where nothing gets posted would, presumably, serve as an indication to SUP that "hey, something's going on here." They would then look and see that nobody posted anything because people are upset because they have done away with ad-free unpaid accounts ( ... )

For the most part, people are ticked that they weren't told about the change before it happened. Actually, the users weren't told about it period. Someone found out about it in the FAQ or something. Then, on top of that, SUP completely ignored the advice of the Advisory Board, who told them that getting rid of basic accounts was a bad bad idea AND didn't realize that SUP was moving forward with this decision. They thought that it was a "What if" type of question posed to them and not a "We're going to do this, what do you think" type. This pretty much negates the entire purpose of the Advisory Board ( ... )

I don't really get it either... it's not like LJ is super expensive or anything. And the ads on free accounts... have people looked at Myspace or Facebook lately? I can't even use their sites cause they're so chuck full of ads. LJ has been my saving grace for having an online journal.

Since I got my basic account back when it was still possible, I don't really care if people can't get them from now on. Selfish? Probably, but I just don't see it as being a big huge deal. In fact, if everyone who got their knickers in a twist goes on strike, the quality of content will probably be higher on that day...
