f(x)= I passed!

Passed my math placement test today. That's a big relief, not only because I had to pass in order to register for my econ summer class, but also because it means I still remember something from high school (though I did have to study for a few days before I could take the test, but come on, who among us really knows the quadratic formula without ( Read more... )

No science/math types are allowed to answer that. In fact, no matter who you are, if you knew it without looking it up, just don't answer, okay?

Party pooper...I was looking forward to typing in:
x equals negative b plus or minus the square root of b squared minus four a c all divided by 2 a. oops not supposed to say that..

*snerk* That is one of the things that got so totally drilled into my little brain that I will NEVER, EVER forget it. I've never used it beyond my classes I learned it for, but I know it if and when I ever need it again.

As for reading, I manage to throw in a chapter or two most evenings. Occasionally I can manage to have a day to read so I've pretty much stayed caught up on my pleasure reading. But you've got a few on your list that I haven't read yet, so I may have to add to my "to read" list.

Good luck catching up on them all.

I was finishing summer school, for my kids, today. (Not for me, I have a summer off, probably more than that b/c his hubbikins has declared a moratorium on my taking classes for a while.) I was making kids work just b/c they had one more day although I had to have grades done yesterday so report cards could go out today. *sigh*

Either that or I was cleaning my classroom, going through the stuff I inherited when I changed grade levels. I did that for a few hours today too..

Sounds like you did OK on your test though. Congrats on passing. And good luck in your economics class. Macro, you said? Much easier than micro.

Sounds like you're really busy right now. I hope you get a chance to relax before the summer is over!

One of our cats is noticeably more affectionate with strangers than with us, and DH is convinced it's because he (the cat, not DH) has still not forgiven us for fixing him. Poor kitty.

Congrats on passing the test! I don't remember the quadratic formula either, and I'm not mathophobic.

You know, it seems as if having a doctorate should exempt you from high-school level placement tests at community colleges, but that's just me. :-D

:-D I definitely think cats have memories about those sorts of things. Ours are pretty forgiving cats, but they can tell when something's up (we're about to leave for vacation, they have to go to the vet, etc.). I just wish they possessed rational thinking abilities so I could explain why they needed to go to the vet. I said this to my DH yesterday, and he rolled his eyes and said, "You mean so that you could explain why you're right. That's your definition of rational." I thought this was quite something, coming from Mr. Logic and Rationality himself. *sticks tongue out at him, even though (or especially because) he isn't in the same room right now* :-P

Life's just fine, thanks! Busy, but fine.

Yeah, I find it's best to stick one's tongue out at people who don't know you're doing it and therefore cannot retaliate. ;-)

You are mixing it up, Sophie! I've read several of these, and I still need to read Insidious.

No, I can't remember the Quadratic Formula.

No, I can't remember the Quadratic Formula.

Yay! I was actually studying the quadratic formula at Starbucks this morning. I thought of you - not when I was doing math but when I was thinking of what to order. ;-D

I've read several of these

Which have you read?

I'm looking forward to catching up with Draco and Pansy!

Congrats on the text.

I once took an online maths test that was meant to show whether you would pass the 7th or 8th grade of an American school. Well, I would have, but I was astonished to realise how much I had forgotten and how different the words for maths in German and English are. Most of the time I had to guess, because I didn't know the vocabulary.

That's a very generous offer about the fics. Sadly, I would have to write one first. ;)

Oh, wow, I could NEVER take a math test (or any other test) in German! ;-D

What I reviewed over the past day was material I covered in 8th and 9th grade. I believe most people around the world learn algebra much earlier than that. When did you cover it in Germany?

I'm happy if I can do the word problems (things like "If a container holds x liters and a faucet fills the container at y liters/second" sort of question). Those seem to have more relevance to my daily life than the quadratic formula.

Sadly, I would have to write one first.

I've enjoyed your RTW fics!

Oh dear. I'm not good at remembering stuff like that, but I'm quite sure that we must have started with algebra in the sixth grade. We didn't start with it in primary school, but it must have been rather soon afterwards.

Yes, I know what you mean. What we did in maths during the last few years wasn't something you would need in normal life.
