I do not post here enough. Things have happened! I should have tl;dr'ed about my job at the German Cultural Center already, or talked about the strange and ridiculous things I've done with people here, or had something introspective and rambly about my mother and music and delicious Mexcian food all in the same evening, or at least geeked the fuck out about Wagner's Ring cycle. But then, y'know, I think back on all the things I should have tl;dr'ed about, and I'm like, "Well shit, I don't have time to do that much tl;dr, I'll do that when I have a good hour to post." But then I don't, and now we're up to, like, three hours of material, and I don't want to write it all and I guarantee no one wants to hear it, so here, in the interest of getting me back into the swing of things, is the recap:
-This summer is really, really rad.
-I work at the German Cultural Center. I am not terribly good at office work, but now, a week before the termination of my contract, I am finally figuring things out. Fun fact: The German word for staple remover is "Schwiegermutter," which means "mother-in-law."
-I'm also taking College Algebra at the college down the road, and though the class can be soul-crushingly boring, I love my classmates! My tablebuddy is hilarious and always shares her Starbursts, my teabro gave me a box of lapsang and we geek about Game of Thrones together in hand gestures across the room when class gets particularly boring. Only a month left of the class, anyhow!
-Wagner. Wagner Wagner Wagner Wagner Wagner. I have this 70-year-old book of all his librettos that my dad let me borrow, and I've been reading the Ring cycle in German and English and having amazing language geekery moments (alliteration!! rhyme!! wordplay!! Norsery! puns!!!!), like when I finally realized in the middle of Die Walküre that the English translation retained all of the original meter and spent literally fifteen minutes counting syllables and wanted to grab the person next to me on the bus home and go "Look! Look! This is mad genius, right here, don't you see it?!" but didn't because I like not getting thrown off the bus. And then there's the fact that this is the most shounen music ever written by a human, and if I could find a version of the making of the rainbow bridge that I thought did justice to the recording I have, then I would link it, but unfortunately Dohnanyi and the Cleveland Orchestra's version of it have ruined me for pretty much every other guy who will ever try to play Donner, so. ...Though this might be my bias talking-- it's the version I grew up with but apparently it's not the best? BUT EVERYONE ELSE MAKES THE RAINBOW BRIDGE TOO DAMN SLOWLY, AND DAMN IT IF YOUR DONNER DOES NOT DEVOUR SCENERY THEN YOU NEED A NEW DONNER oh my god moving on.
...I'm so obsessed with these operas I'm considering livestreaming my geeking about them, because no one I know in real life will tolerate me talking about them anymore. And I'm only halfway through the cycle.
-My mom and I have been talking a lot, and spending a lot of time together, and doing rad things and cooking, and we pretty much have things figured out, and we can go out to fancy restaurants and discuss my sexuality in public and stuff, and it is pretty incredible. We can even sit there and cheerfully discuss each other's faults! Man, being an adult is weird. But this is fine by me.
-I've been writing a lot! Surprisingly! Been footling around in the Norse pantheon some more (who is surprised?), and a little bit in the Hindu one?? And just writing stupid short things, and it's nothing serious, but it's fun!
-Last night I dreamed that I was trying to drive down I-20, but god damn it, all these people were out walking their goddamned dinosaurs and I kept having to stop! And then the Canadian mounted police showed up to sing something for us, about dinosaurs, before they fixed the road so that cars and dinosaurs could coexist peacefully on it. Then I woke up.
So let that sum up what's been going on in my life. How are you guys? Long time no see!
