Lights and Fanfare?

So, I've been reading a lot, taking notes to put together for a BoS, should I start to make one atm, and I've come across a few things that strike me as silly, and I'd like to know your opinion as well.

For example, I'm reading through Cunningham's "Earth, Air, Fire, Water," And to anyone whose read it, I've gotten to the actual spell/ritual part. Now, reading through his things (which are refreshingly ncommon term, compared so some others I've read), he said that words are power. I know this all too well, however, it just seems silly to me, to sit there at an altar and chant like a baboon in order to make something work. I live in an apartment, and though my 'heathen' girlfriend understands (she's a Norse follower), I'm not quite sure the older woman down stairs wants to hear "BY THE POWER OF THE MOTHER MOON HEAL SO AND SO." I also don't think I'd be able to get through a ritual with a straight face If I had to chant this.

HOWEVER

I find that there are times when saying/thinking/screaming things in my mind have more effect than saying them does. Sort of like visualization. I say it with passion in my head and it seems just as powerful, if not more so, than chanting it out physically. Has anyone else experienced this? Do you have any suggestions? I'd much appreciate it.
