A spin-off of the Sci Fi Channel series "Battlestar Galactica" set 50 years prior to the events of that show.
  • Bitten* (i.e. another Canadian show, based on the book series by author Kelley Armstrong)
    IMDB summary: When she left Stonehaven Elena Michaels thought she had left the world of supernatural behind. Until the night she got a mysterious call from her pack leader asking her to come back. So now she is heading back, away from her normal life as a photographer in Toronto and back into the world of werewolves, full of rules about how to protect the pack and a man she had spent years trying to forget. As if things were not bad enough, Elena also happens to be the only living female werewolf.
  • Blindspot*
    IMDB summary: A Jane Doe is found in Times Square with no memory and mysterious tattoos on her body.
  • Blood & Treasure*
    IMDB summary: An antiquities expert teams up with an art thief to catch a terrorist who funds his attacks using stolen artifacts. (*Bea wishes to mention that the harmful trope that is the Muslim or middle eastern terrorist is present in this show, which bothered me. Especially given the fact that so-called ‘white nationalists’ are a much greater threat to western countries…)
  • Blood Ties
    IMDB summary: This gritty supernatural drama centers on Vicki Nelson a former homicide cop turned private investigator and Henry Fitzroy a 470 year old vampire. Together they form a unique team solving cases and dealing with the supernatural world. (This was another Canadian show, based on a series of books by author Tanya Huff.)
  • Bomb Girls
    IMDB summary: This is another neat Canadian TV show. Set during World War II, Bomb Girls tells the remarkable stories of the women who risked their lives in a munitions factory building bombs for the Allied forces fighting on the European front.
  • Bones
    IMDB summary: A forensic anthropologist and a cocky FBI agent build a team to investigate mysterious deaths. And quite often, there isn't more to examine than rotten flesh or mere bones.
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer (NB: see also the section for the spinoff ‘Angel’ above)
    IMDB summary: At the young age of 15, Buffy Summers was chosen to hunt vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness. Joined by friends Willow and Xander and her watcher Giles, Buffy fights the challenges of High School and saves the world... a lot.

    • Twisting the hellmouth. Angela's description: This website contains an extensive crossover archive for BTVS crossed with anything you can imagine. The fiction posted here is almost always well done and I'm quite addicted to many of the stories.

  • Charlie Jade
    Charlie Jade was a Canadian-South African co-production filmed in South Africa. The series is set on an earth where three parallel universes exist. The main character, Charlie Jade, is a private detective from one universe who gets stuck in our universe.
  • Chuck
    IMDB summary: When a twenty-something computer geek inadvertently downloads critical government secrets into his brain, CIA and NSA assign two agents to protect him and exploit such knowledge, turning his life upside down.
  • Closer (The) (this section is both for ‘The Closer’ and its spinoff series ‘Major Crimes’)
    ‘The Closer’ focuses on Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, a former Atlanta police officer and CIA-trained interrogator, who is given the opportunity to run her own division of elite officers of the Los Angeles Police Department. (The spin-off, known as 'Major Crimes', featured the same characters as the original, save the lead character which was replaced by a Captain Raydor (played by Mary McDonnell).
  • Constantine
    IMDB summary: A man struggling with his faith is haunted by the sins of his past but is suddenly thrust into the role of defending humanity from the gathering forces of darkness. (NB: Please note that the character of Constantine from this series now appears in the CW DC show ‘Legends of Tomorrow’.)
  • Containment
    IMDB summary: The series follows an epidemic that breaks out in Atlanta, leaving the large city quarantined and those stuck on the inside fighting for their lives. The drama tells the story of loved ones torn apart, and how the society that grows inside the cordon reveals both the devolution of humanity and the birth of unlikely heroes.
  • Continuum
    Bea and Angela comments: Another really cool Canadian science fiction creation by the people at Showcase (i.e. same network that hosts ‘Lost Girl’). In this show, a young woman working as a police officer in 2077 is transported into the past (i.e. back to 2012) at the same time as a dangerous group of criminals.
  • Covert Affairs
    This series deals with a young CIA operative/trainee, Annie Walker, who is sent into the field to work for the DPD (Domestic Protection Division).
  • Criminal Minds (This section includes the spinoff series, ‘Beyond Borders’.)
  • Crusade (i.e. 'Babylon 5' spinoff series): See the 'Babylon 5' section above.
  • CSI (This section includes the listing for the spinoff series, CSI Cyber.)
    • CSI (Original tv series)
      IMDB summary: An elite team of police forensic evidence investigation experts work their cases in Las Vegas.
    • CSI: Cyber
      IMDB summary: Special agent Avery Ryan works to solve crimes as a CyberPsychologist for the FBI.
  • Dark Angel
    IMDB summary: A group of genetically-enhanced children escape from a lab project. Years later we meet Max, one of the escapees who now works for a messenger service in the post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest.
  • Dark Matter
    (This is another Canadian show.) IMDB summary: The six-person crew of a derelict spaceship awakens from stasis in the farthest reaches of space. Their memories wiped clean, they have no recollection of who they are or how they got on board. The only clue to their identities is a cargo bay full of weaponry and a destination: a remote mining colony that is about to become a war zone. With no idea whose side they are on, they face a deadly decision. Will these amnesiacs turn their backs on history, or will their pasts catch up with them?
  • DC Comics inspired
    • Arrow
      IMDB summary: Spoiled billionaire playboy Oliver Queen is missing and presumed dead when his yacht is lost at sea. He returns five years later a changed man, determined to clean up the city as a hooded vigilante armed with a bow. (NB: This series is based on the character in the DC comics.)

    • Flash (The) (i.e. spinoff of the CW show ‘Arrow’)
      IMDB summary: Barry Allen wakes up 9 months after he was struck by lightning and discovers that the bolt gave him the power of super speed. With his new team and powers, Barry becomes "The Flash" and fights crime in Central City.

    • Smallville
      IMDB summary: A young Clark Kent struggles to find his place in the world as he learns to harness his alien powers for good and deals with the typical troubles of teenage life in Smallville.
    • Supergirl
      IMDB summary: The adventures of Superman's cousin in her own superhero career.
  • Dead Zone (The)*
    This show deals with a man named John Smith who is in an automobile accident and stays in a coma for six years. He eventually wakes up with a new psychic ability wherein he can see things from past, present and future whenever he touches things.
  • Defiance
    In the year 2046, over thirty years after various alien races arrived on Earth, the landscape is completely altered, terraformed nearly beyond recognition. To the town of Defiance, on what used to be St. Louis, comes the mysterious Nolan and his charge, Irisa. As they settle into town events begin to unfold that threaten the fragile peace this border town has fought for. (NB: There is also an online video game which is set in the (former) San Francisco area and reportedly the arc plots of both do interact.)
  • Divergent (film series based on the book series by Veronica Roth)
    IMDB summary: Beatrice Prior, a teenager with a special mind, finds her life threatened when an authoritarian leader seeks to exterminate her kind in her effort to seize control of their divided society. (NB: A fourth film, ‘Ascendant’, has reportedly been filmed.)
  • Doctor Who (NB: Includes information about the spinoff series ‘Torchwood’.)
    IMDB summary: (1963-1989 series) The Doctor is a renegade Time Lord: an eccentric, highly-intelligent scientist from a distant planet. He travels through time and space in the TARDIS, a curious device, larger on the inside than on the outside, which was designed to change its appearance to suit its surroundings. Unfortunately, the Doctor's TARDIS seems to be broken, and always appears as a blue British police box. The Doctor has a soft spot for the planet Earth, and often visits there, either to save it from various alien threats or to whisk a choice few inhabitants away to the distant parts of the galaxy to help him fight evil there. The Doctor has many foes, including Daleks (led by Davros), and The Master, another renegade Time Lord. Time Lord biology enables them to regenerate their bodies, and so both the Doctor and the Master appear evolve over the years... (Bea: An extremely famous and long-running UK science fiction show which recently celebrated 50 years.) The second series started running in 2005.
  • Dollhouse
    IMDB summary: A futuristic laboratory assigns different tasks to its various residents, who then have their memories erased upon the completion of their assignments.
  • Dominion
    IMDB summary: Follows the perilous journey of a rebellious young soldier who discovers he's the unlikely savior of humanity.
  • Dracula*
    This was a television series based on the story of Dracula, with a steampunk feel.
  • Elementary
    IMDB summary: A modern take on the cases of Sherlock Holmes, with the detective now living in New York City.
  • Expanse (The)
    IMDB summary: A police detective in the asteroid belt, the first officer of an interplanetary ice freighter and an earth-bound United Nations executive slowly discover a vast conspiracy that threatens the Earth's rebellious colony on the asteroid belt.
  • Falling Skies
    IMDB summary: The chaotic aftermath of an alien attack has left most of the world completely incapacitated. In the six months since the initial invasion, the few survivors have banded together outside major cities to begin the difficult task of fighting back. Each day is a test of survival as citizen soldiers work to protect the people in their care while also engaging in an insurgency campaign against the occupying alien force.
  • Farscape
    IMDB summary: Astronaut John Crichton, on an experimental space mission, is accidentally hurled across the universe into the midst of an intergalactic conflict.   • Forever Knight
    IMDB summary: A drama about an 800 year old, angst ridden vampire who lives in present day Toronto as a homicide detective in an attempt to repay for his sins and regain his mortality, with the aid of Natalie Lambert, a mortal coroner, while trying to keep his secret from his partner. His quests are hindered by his tormented past and his controlling 2000 year old master, Lucien Lacroix.
