I've been jogging approximately 4 miles every day for the last few weeks. I thought my conditioning was improving. So yesterday I decided to go to the park to play some pickup games of basketball. I played really great the first game, which my team won. But in the following two games I was clearly out of gas. Gasping for air, hunched over, I was sweating like crazy. Definitely not showing anything resembling stamina. So I've decided to up the ante. Today I'm going to run six miles. Perhaps that will bring me more energy that can translate into more endurance and stamina on the court. It's wonderful to know I can still perform at a high level when I have the energy. First play of the first game I blew right by my defender for a lay-up, and then I hit a few threes, had a few steals, and even blocked a few shots. I was playing great when I had energy. So working on endurance is my main priority this summer. Sound mind, sound body! That's my philosophy for now.
As a side note. There is a new ABA expansion basketball team in Elmira that's starting this year. It would be amazing to actually play for them (as a fun little way to get into shape and relive my glory years from high school). However, today I woke up totally exhausted, aching, unable to really get out of bed. That's not a good sign. I realized that I'm woefully out of shape and probably ten to fifteen pounds overweight. So I've decided to play some pickup basketball games over the summer, and if there's a tryout later on in the summer I'll give it a whirl. Tryouts are on July 25th. Definitely not enough time to whip myself into playing shape. But if I play at the park everyday and build up my stamina I will tryout if there is an opportunity in August. Wish me luck!
