The Al Purdy poem we studied yesterday straddles the lines between poem, prose, anecdote, and SNL sketch so brilliantly I thought I'd share it. For those wondering the actor playing the poet is Gord Downie, lead singer of The Tragically Hip.

Granted to me "UFO" means "Unidentified Flying Object" and NOT "Little Green Men". I'm pretty sure that what I saw was just a very bright satellite, and not the results of intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic gazing upon us with envious eyes, drawing their plans against us. *

I just wanted to thank everyone who responded to my question regarding that Emily Dickinson poem and the use/meaning of the word "surge". While I'm not 100% convinced she's talking about boobies, I've got to admit that she could very well be referring to the feminine shape, especially if their isn't any structural term called "surge" that lace ( Read more... )

Tonight during my American Lit class we were discussing Emily Dickinson's poetry, and this poem caused some confusion:

"The thought beneath so slight a film
Is more distinctly seen, ---
As laces just reveal the surge,
Or mists the Apennine."
