Top Five Doctor Who Costumes thingy

ushas42 asked for this one:
Top Five Outfits.

I, um... I ended up doing complete Who serials, because most of my favourite costumes appear together. So, yes! Huge epic picspam time! Will kill dialup hard. I present:

Grouse's Top Five Doctor Who Serials For The Discerning Costume Geek.

The Keeper of Traken.

I love, love, *LOVE* the costumes in this. They're an interesting mix of Renaissance, Baroque, Victoriana and Art Nouveau. But mostly Art Nouveau. Oops, I seem to have uploaded a huge bunch of pics. But the costumes and the set design are so pretty, it's just a feast for the eyes.

Even the old withered Keeper looks like he stepped out of an old drawing. Really, this reminds me of the illustrations in an old 1950s edition of the Arabian Nights I browsed recently. Even if it isn't Oriental in style, but ohhh. Me likey.

I didn't actually find Nyssa too annoying in this one, even though the little princess whining made me want to throw her into the Vortex later. The petal skirt was a lovely idea, and probably would've worked much better if they'd only used it for this particular serial alone. Look at that lovely silhouette the outfit gives her--her waist looks tiny! I love the general outline of the costumes, and the crazy fluffy curly hair on the women.

I also love the organic, asymmetric patchwork cut on the frocks and the ridiculous amounts of buttons, they give the outfits a nicy fairytale touch. Because this is supposed to be a world that's so harmonious and happy that evil just shrivels up and dies.

I didn't even notice all those little details on Cameca's Katura's dress before looking at this picture! Ooooh. That's a lovely touch. I can't tell if those things at the front are feathers or something, but they look intriguing. (ETA: A-ha! It seems she's got a feathered fan. So that's what it is!)

Look at that little pouch on Kassia's dress! I love little details like that. You wouldn't need those at all in a stage costume, but I love the fact that they put in a detail like that anyway. It's wonderful.

Even the guard dudes' costumes look interesting. These are a bit elaborate and Romantic, as far as uniforms go. Don't look so bored, guys!

And check out the trains on those robes! Definitely reminds me of Art Nouveau illustrations of medieval characters.

These pics are just gratuitous, though.
"So, Tom, basically, I'm going to be playing your evil ex-boyfriend and I'm going to kill you. Is that right?"

"Yes, Tony. You're going to break the hearts of millions of children." "Excellent. Fancy a pint?"

AND I ALSO LOVE IT QUITE HARD because it introduced *this* costume. (Yes, I know this photo is from Mark of the Rani, but it's not like you get a good look at the costume in Traken.)

And it's silly that a piece of promotional artwork should be the best picture of that particular costume, but at least it's a great painting. Not that I'm obsessed with it or anything. I really, really, really just love that costume. It's black and elegant and a bit melodramatic in a proper villainous style (the coattails are a bit outrageous but I wub them), and yet the black velvet suggests sensuality and seductiveness, making the Ainley Master into this big stalking cat (it's not a surprise he did turn into a cat in the end), but just... guh. As much as I love Delgado's Nehru jacket, this one has to be my favourite Master costume (and the competition is tough). *nuzzles*

The Time Monster.

AAAAAH! Porn, porn, porn! And not just for Galleia's dresses. I really love the way the costume design adapts ancient Minoan costume. It's so accurate that the only way to make it more accurate would be to have the women going around topless and for the men to go around in see-through loincloths. But the compromises still look classical (the top bits of the women's dresses follow the lines of later Cretan women's costume, and there's still a huge amount of boobage on display).

That girdle is magnificient. I can't tell if that's a lion's head or a Medusa's head on the belt there, but the detail is awesome.

I can't decide if I prefer the blue dress or the white one, because on the white dress, the girdle-type thing is even tighter and the neckline is even more daring. I'm sure Ingrid Pitt was forced to move elegantly just so she wouldn't pop out of that thing! How Delgado managed to get the scene in the can without glancing at her boobs once is beyond me. Mmmmm...

I swear, this is the biggest amount of cleavage ever shown on Doctor Who. It's indecent! And I love it.

But the blue dress, oh... it makes her look like a snake goddess.

See? Look at that layered skirt! It's wonderful.

Speaking of layers, I adore that robe High Priest Krassis wears. No, I really do. And the hairdos on the women and the men are copied straight out of Minoan frescoes! It makes my inner history/mythology geek so happy.

Yes, I even like the Chronovore. SUE ME.

And yes, I have a better rip of this somewhere so I should cap it because these pics are a bit crap, but if it *does* come out on DVD in the winter, it's definitely worth waiting for.

The Deadly Assassin.
Chancellor Goth in da hooooouse, bitches betta recognise.

I adore the costume design in this one, but I've already made a huge picspammy essay about Timey clothes on here with several pics from this serial, so I'll just leave it at that one picture. I can't tell you how much I love these costumes, and Tom's swashbuckling look and the more toned-down Timey robes. James Acheson struck gold with this one.

The Robots of Death.

FUCK AND YES. Where do I even start? Who meets Art Deco with a huge dash of glam thrown in. Not to mention the story being effing brilliant, but as a B7 fangirl, I'm biased towards Chris Boucher scripts.

The robots themselves are gorgeous.

KILL ALL HUMANS.

Poul's costume is a bit tame, but I like the sort of late 16th, early 17th century touch in the wings and the big shirts and the breeches and stuff. And you can never ever have too much David Collings.

I like this outfit, despite its silliness. EVEN ROMANA TRIES IT ON IN DESTINY, YO (so that must mean it's posh). And it kind of goes with the frivolity of the rich, decadent mine technicians' culture. "Lol, I am a sea creature for a day". Maybe that's a fetish, search me. But it's all about the excess, so silliness is all over the place.

Hello, Brian. Sorry I didn't use any of those pics where he's getting vibro-massage from the robots, as kinky as that was. It's lovely how this was made when glam rock was already on its way out. But does our Cockney Nutjob care? Nah, he fucking doesn't. Eyeliner and poofy britches for everyone.
I think someone once said the sandminer folks look like they're basically just drinking, fucking, taking drugs and lazing about all day, which definitely fits. It's one big cocktail party for them.

I'll save my favourite for last:
UVANOV'S HAT. UVANOV'S. MOTHERFUCKING. HAT. Best hat in Doctor Who ever. Possibly the best hat in everything ever. I FUCKING LOVE IT. I genuinely do. It's gorgeous. It's like an unfurling flower and like some sort of alien priest's mitre. And check out the cut of those clothes, the way the various bits come together and drape and flow gorgeously? It's a silly costume, yes, but... design-wise, it's made of itty bitty pieces of motherfucking win. THIS HAT SHOULD HAVE ITS OWN SPINOFF. And I don't mean Kaldor City, because you couldn't see the hat in that one and this made me cry.

And have another shot of the hat for good measure. As Two would say, I should like a hat like that.

And this wouldn't be complete without some June Hudson squee. It's hard to pick my favourites out of her designs, because she's crazy in the head and I love it. Look, she did *Nimon*, for chrissakes, not to mention all the crazy kinky leather stuff in Blake's 7. But for general nostalgia and win, I shall choose...

The Ribos Operation.

Why? Simply because it's one of those things that really got me hooked on Who in the first place, and I love it to bits (Robert Holmes/Douglas Adams OTFUCKINP). And the costumes aren't bad either. *g* They are quite impressive.

Enter Romana! That dress definitely helped to give her that classic, elegant, statuesque Time Lady look.

And the good old feather cloak!

Yes, it's a fahbulous cloak indeed. So good, in fact, that the most evil woman in the universe had to steal it.

Tom doesn't look impressed with his medieval armour thing, though. Even if it's an interesting type of armour.

Pimps. May I just say that "THE GRAFF VYNDA-K" is one of the most awesome character titles/names ever? There, I said it. I love how everyone in this serial is dressed like it's a Russian opera. Hey, recycling costumes is cheap and results in good fun. I also love the eyebrow-raising expression the Graff is doing there. You can just hear him go "Laaaadies." HE IS LIKE THAT ALL THE TIME.

I also loved the ritual this guy did with the crown jewels when he put out the lights by waving his staff around. And again, love the detail in the costume.

Speaking of which (or witch, har har har):
This shamanic priestess was AWESOME. I love the markings on her face and her hands and the fact that she was batshit insane. And I'm a sucker for feather cloaks.

Garron/Unstoffe: a classic Holmesian duo. I really like the fact that they're like vaguely-medievalish space versions of the plainly dressed henchman and the shifty Cockney geezer with lots of gold chains and rocks.

So, there you have it. A huge spam, but worth it. I wish I could've included more stories, but even this took me hours to compile! Some of the stories that didn't make it this time, like The Brain of Morbius and The Androids of Tara, I will have to squee about on a later date:D.
