(creative_muses) Beware of Dog

"A man flattened by an opponent can get up again. A man flattened by conformity stays down for good". ~ Thomas J. Watson, Jr.

(Based on 'Verse: Wayward AU)

When Alec finally showed up to work again after a nearly two month absence, it he wasn't like they remembered him. He held himself more cat aloof than cat arrogant. Instead of his usual tight shirt and leather or jean jacket he was wearing an oversized sweater that was big enough to spill down and nearly swallow his hands. All of this was topped off by some sort of pendant that hung from a leather cord around his neck. He paid no attention to it suggesting that he's worn it for a while now and was used to it. Max might notice that he was wearing a pair of Puma sneakers instead of his regular eight hole honest to god combat boots. His hair was a little longer than it used to be and in a complete state of disarray like he'd done nothing but push his hand back through it when he's gotten out of the shower that morning.

The thing that caught the eye though wasn't the wardrobe change or the way he carried himself or even how careful he was with his hands. It was the black beast that stayed pressed to the side of his leg. Technically it resembled a dog. That was the simplest explanation for it. It was about the size of a full grown retriever, but it's size wasn't what made people take a second look. It was that the thing was still distinctly puppy-ish. Paws to big for the rest of it, fur still soft and fluffy without the sheen of guard hair that adult dogs had, one pointed ear that stubbornly flopped over no matter how many times it perked the ear up.

The thing was clearly still a puppy even though it's fur was darker than just black, and it's teeth just simply looked more lethal than sharp and it's eyes were to bright. Calling this thing a dog was as much of an understatement as calling and X5 an ordinary highschool senior. But in the end most peoples minds summed it up as simply 'Scary looking dog.' And the dog clearly didn't like people getting to close to it's master. It was not a pet and it knew it's job even though it was young.

Amazingly Normal hadn't just boot his ass back out. Even more amazing was the way he's looked Alec up and down with an almost concerned expression and then gave Alec the dispatch job without asking a single question. Everyone gave the dog a wide berth and therefor where unable to crowd Alec which suited him just fine. But he had to admit, it was starting to feel good to be back here. To be useful again. To know he didn't have to hide.

He tuned the radio in his area to a classic rock station, and relearned what it felt like to smile and have simple conversations.
