6A's convenient timing: their fandom love/hate story (cont'd)

Jul 19, 2007 19:09

Right. So while I was being overwhelmed with work and the fascination of the rather major HPDH spoilers, 6A has decided once again to post their usual inarticulate sequence of "We've worked out a policy" followed by "A little clarification" followed by "No really, *this* should make it clear ( Read more... )

... the college interns part? :D

No, actually, I've worked in "public participation" -- kind of like customer & client relations, only more exposed, 'cos you're working between federal agencies, state government, large contractors, and the "publics" -- i.e. many many groups of different stakeholders with varied agendas. Big environmental cleanup issues, 9/11 rebuilding, very large expensive political & public relations nightmares and "delicate situations."

I don't do it except in specific areas, and part-time, but I have friends and relatives who do a ton of it. LJ should hire a pro - if they care. I am increasingly not sure whether it's that they don't care, or just can't see their way out of the craziness.

If you can comment without disclosing anything -- any thoughts? Truly, as someone who's worked in corporations and govt, runs college classes (online, yet), deals with committees -- I'm just frankly fascinated by all of this as an intense example of many positive and negative factors, with the whole random growth of SNS throwing in wild cards every other week.

(Like the fact that the Harry Potter canon ended this summer, and has been going sour for 2 years -- MUCH free-floating tension there, and LJ makes huge changes in the middle of that? Fatal! HP fandom is one of the bigger ones, and probably the most networked. WRONG group to stir up drama with this year.)

I think they can't see their way out of the craziness. They're tech geeks, they don't understand people skills.

Your comment about the timing reminds me of the incident that created the gay and lesbian political movement in Australia. The police raided a gay club the night they were having their memorial for Judy Garland. Just Not Smart.

NO! *sporfle*

That's like... a classic for the textbooks of how NOT to understand your public. Odd how much is spent "understanding the enemy" and so little on ... Ah. That would be because "publics" like gay folks are so habitually discounted as not even there, just a couple weirdos -- or taken to be fools.

Like LJ with fandom! I wonder if some day, the year of FanLib, Strikethrough, and the Ban on Sexuality will be mentioned in histories of free speech online, and the end of puritanism & hypocrisy in US sexuality?

Thanks for this anecdote! What a classic.
