I think they can't see their way out of the craziness. They're tech geeks, they don't understand people skills.

Your comment about the timing reminds me of the incident that created the gay and lesbian political movement in Australia. The police raided a gay club the night they were having their memorial for Judy Garland. Just Not Smart.

That's like... a classic for the textbooks of how NOT to understand your public. Odd how much is spent "understanding the enemy" and so little on ... Ah. That would be because "publics" like gay folks are so habitually discounted as not even there, just a couple weirdos -- or taken to be fools.

Like LJ with fandom! I wonder if some day, the year of FanLib, Strikethrough, and the Ban on Sexuality will be mentioned in histories of free speech online, and the end of puritanism & hypocrisy in US sexuality?
