A long time ago, the Fraunhofer Institute (the folks that own the MP3 patents) started saying they from now on, they needed a cut whenever an MP3 gets encoded or decoded. So a bunch of smart people got together and came up with Vorbis... works just like MP3, but sounds a little better - and no licensing fees!
