Fashion for fat girls

Dec 02, 2006 23:06

The shop where I work sells clothes for fat women. Although that word is hardly ever said. ‘Big’ is the most common euphemism, and not too dishonest.

The most common concern is the exposure of arms, a fear which always surprises me. They are only arms, after all.

A woman comes in and asks if we have any clothes that will make her look skinny. I want to say ‘No, how could they, you’re not skinny.’ Instead I offer to help her find something ‘flattering,’ knowing she won’t want it in the end.

Later, a woman who is skinny asks for my help converting the sizes of our jeans. ‘What size is a twenty-two?’ she asks. I tell her a twenty-two is a twenty-two. She doesn’t understand. Such a size is incomprehensible. ‘Is it like a twelve?’ I say ‘No, it’s a twenty-two. We sell “big” clothes here’.
