Sly Day

I finally saw Expendables 2 yesterday and liked it quite a bit. It's better than I was expecting it to be despite having heard several favorable reviews. Jean Claude Van Damme surprised me and made an excellent villain. I get the feeling they listened to the people who watched the first film because there were a lot of complaints that it was too slow and boring and that is not the case this time around. My one complaint is the way the worked in the references to the stars' classic films, which is to say they didn't and instead seem to have just thrown them in. If they could have worked them in in such a way that it went with the dialog or a scene or whatever, I'd be happy, but they didn't and they seem very unnatural. They might as well have just not included them except the fans obviously expect it.

Later in the evening, keeping the Sly Stallone theme going, we watched Demolition Man, which I've been wanting to see for years but hadn't until then. I was very pleasantly surprised by this one. I expected it to be cheesy and it was, but in a much more intentional way than I expected. I was just expecting a bad, dark action/sci-fi film, which Demolition Man is not. It's hard to recommend a film like this to people because too many that I know don't appreciate a film setting out to be a little silly the way it does. I'm not saying I like every film that does this -- stuff like the Scary Movie franchise and Remember The Spartans make me sick -- but the ones that are done well and aren't just uninspired spoofs are sometimes good. In a way. So yeah, Demolition Man shattered my expectations with brighter colors, a bigger cast, and a lot of humor. I think they did a good job and made just the film they set out to make.
