Sly Day

I finally saw Expendables 2 yesterday and liked it quite a bit. It's better than I was expecting it to be despite having heard several favorable reviews. Jean Claude Van Damme surprised me and made an excellent villain. I get the feeling they listened to the people who watched the first film because there were a lot of complaints that it was too ( Read more... )

Cool. A few of my friends like it, but they're part of Bad Movie Night™ crowd, so I wasn't sure if they liked it because it was actually a fun movie, or if it was just nostalgia or so bad that it was fun to mock.

I might have to start giving people the penalty buzzer whenever someone swears. : )

I went through a stage last year of buying a load of cheap 90s action movies on DVD and have to say that this was definitely one of the best - I loved the fact that it didn't take itself too seriously, plus it gave us Sandra Bullock in her breakout role!

My friend, Mike, who I watched it with mentioned that she received a raspberry award for worst actress from some critic/group of critics, but I don't think she was bad. She simply acted the roll she was given and did it. It seems like they judged the roll and not her, which is narrow minded and crap.

I'm intrigued and would like to know what else you bought. I intend to check out a couple more action/sci-fi flicks from the '90s like Johnny Mnemonic and Virtuosity, both of which I've not seen. Oh and speaking of Sandra Bullock, The Net.

Ah, Demolition Man. It's one of the very, VERY few Sylvester Stallone movies where he's trying to be funny and cutesy that I can stand. (Hell, I had trouble sitting through The Expendables, and that isn't cutesy at all.) Of course, I think Wesley Snipes nearly steals the picture, except that it's not ever nearly--he totally does. He was on fire there for a decade or so, and the fact that Sylvester Stallone manages to mostly keep up is saying a lot.

There are some truly choice moments, too. Myself, I get the fits every time Dennis Leary, the leader of the goddamned resistance (oh god, that alone is funny enough a concept that I'm laughing here) goes on his long rant about he wants to eat some goddamned bacon and fuck his arteries up. Love it.

Dennis Leary was a very pleasant surprise. I didn't know anyone other than Sly and Wesley was in it before I watched. I cracked up when he went on that rant the rant that mimicked his classic standup, too. Snipes was unstoppable from the late '80s through the late '90s (Major League through Blade). Major League was my introduction to him and he was good in that, but I couldn't believe that was him in later on in White Men Can't Jump and onward just 'cause I did not foresee Willy Mays Hayes going on to be a leading man and action star. I wonder if he would have been included in Expendables 2 if he weren't in prison. Anyway, now that you mention it, I don't like more than one or two films where Sly tries to be funny/cutesy. The only other one I can think of that I do like is Oscar, which I like quite a bit.

Oh man, I totally forgot Major League. Have you seen To Wong Fu: Thanks for everything, Julie Newmar? Because if you want to see Wesley Snipes own a movie, that's the one. I mean, he's great as an action star, etc., but until you've seen him play a drag queen, you have not lived. For reals, he was an AWESOME drag queen.

I keep forgetting about To Wong Fu! I was like "meh" when I was a kid and it came out, but then I kept hearing more and more good things about it from friends as I got older and have been planning on watching it for years. I'll do so ASAP. Thanks for yet another reminder. : )

Ok, the list as far as I can remember went thusly;
Tank Girl (features Ice T as a mutant kangaroo)
The Relic (a fun monster in a museum romp)
Cutthroat Island (a flop of monumental proportions, but not as bad as its rep)
TimeCop
Broken Arrow (where Christian Slater and John Travolta attempt to out act each other)
Mortal Kombat (massive fun)
Street Fighter (rubbish yet fun)
The Last Action Hero
Under Siege (Warning, contains Gary Busey in drag)
Judge Dredd
Con Air (an absolute classic)
Hudson Hawk (a mess, yet an entertaining one)
True Lies (Arnies last great movie)
Hard Rain
Species (the first film was good, ignore all 3 sequels)
Universal Soldier (Van Damme AND Lundgren!)

I remember watching Johnny mnemonic years ago and didn't think that it was that bad! And The Net is entertaining but clearly written by someone who is not entirely an expert on how the Internet actually works plus the technology used now looks slightly dated...

Tank Girl has been at the top of my must-see list for quite a while thanks to rave reviews from a few close friends ( ... )

Awesome! I do kind of remember the soundtrack being good now that you mention it, but only vaguely. Thanks for the tip. Gotta check it out soon.

I am so unfamiliar with action stars that I'm afraid The Expendables would go over my head. It helps that I haven't seen the first of the two movies, and now they have a sequel? It looks like it could be fun though. :)

And nope - haven't seen Demolition Man either. LOL

Haha no worries. Shameless appeal to action fans' nostalgia is the whole concept here, but they are fun action movies even if you're not familiar with the stars and their film history.

I bet you'd enjoy Demolition Man. It's a lot of fun and not just for action -- its quirky humor was what I enjoyed the most.
