Mass Mugging at MAN March

A Mothers Against Newcomers picket of Francis Bonnefoy's residence, at the border of Sectors 4 and 9, was interrupted this afternoon by a gang of Sector 9 youths in a brazen robbery.

At 1:13 this afternoon (according to the security tapes at Mr. Bonnefoy's residence, an apartment house catering to Newcomers), approximately two dozen mostly male youths, arrived at the MAN protest, which at that point was thirty members strong. Throwing the mostly female picketers to the ground, the robbers collected handbags, NVs, jewelry, and other valuables. At 1:21, the building's door opened. While three of the residents, Newcomers Jubilation Lee, Gertrude Yorkes (accompanied by her dinosaur Old Lace), and Chuck Shurley (in a flying wheelchair) confronted the attackers, the landlord, Newcomer Dr. Michael Xavier, started shepherding injured protesters inside the residence. None of the attackers attempted to pursue into the building, grabbing the stolen property and fleeing from Ms. Lee instead.

One of the neighborhood youths, not alleged to have taken part in the attack, responded to our interviewer's query about whether this unanimity was evidence of attacker-resident collusion by saying, "It just shows the gang weren't sub-norms to go attacking a building where people make a habit of opening the doors after Sirens!"

The building's security tapes have been made available to the police, who are familiar with most of the thugs caught unmasked on video and already had eleven arrest warrants issued as of the time of this report. The recordings from the most obvious camera, above the front door, were also provided to our news crew upon request. It showed graphical violence, but except for one sideshot, the attackers were masked or kept their faces away from the camera. (Police discussion overheard by some of our reporters indicated the presence of other cameras of which the attackers were apparently less aware; the landlord acknowledged the existence of additional cameras but declined to state the exact details.)

When asked for comment, Mr. Bonnefoy said, "I'm simply glad no one was more badly hurt, and I hope that the men responsible are reprimanded for harming these ladies." He also offered news crew excellent tea and homemade pastries which he said had been much appreciated by the MAN members during their visit. He declined to comment on the Mothers Against Newcomers more generally, but it did seem to be an understandably painful subject for him.

Jubilation Lee, one of the tenants in the house being picketed, when questioned as to why she helped, answered with the following: "It's their right to hate me and I'll defend that right forever."

Gertrude Yorkes was also willing to speak on the record, and said, "I certainly don't condone the actions, but really, it was a matter of time before this happened. Anyone who tells you otherwise is kidding themselves. Karma loves to give people what they deserve."

Chuck Shurley, who was eager to demonstrate his wheelchair's ability to fly and shoot lasers, said, "I don't think it matters who they are. We've all seen enough darkness here to let anyone else get hurt, don't you think?"

The building's landlord also consented to a brief interview. When asked if the building had defenses besides cameras, Dr. Xavier smiled, and observed, "It tends to be bad policy to publicize the defenses of a building which has been subject to harassment. However, my former employer - responsible for Chuck's wheelchair - has recently been in to rework defenses."

Questioned about his willingness to not only treat, but protect, those who had been protesting outside their home, who wanted to bar Newcomer children from schools and other factors of life, the doctor turned sharply. "Look. I understand it's not what people expect. And I could give you a speech on being a doctor, on it being duty to treat the injured. I won't waste your time or mine. They are blind, bigoted women lashing out at one group instead of addressing their own social ills. Perhaps helping them won't do any good, they will continue to see all of us in the same negative light. Perhaps it will. I won't pretend I didn't think of that. But mostly? No one deserves to be beaten or robbed. And I'm not going to leave someone bleeding outside my front stoop - born here or somewhere else."

When reached for comment, Mrs. Agnes Bruckerhoff, who had been treated at and released from Skye hospital, accused Mr. Bonnefoy of having paid thugs to attack the protest.

- Lighthouse Expedition Begins: The trip to the lighthouse for Morrison and his crew went off with only minor difficulties yesterday. The boat they were using nearly crashed into some rocks, as the seas were a bit choppy, but no one was injured. The group of four went inside and checked in every hour to let their team back home know that they were well. Light discussions were had into the early evening as a few artifacts and documents were found, but nothing has been released. A little after 6pm, however, there was complete radio silence. No one has been able to reach the crew since.
