This post on a space community makes me smile. I really love the fact that the space industry has made a real impact on our daily lives--it makes my life goals seem a little less arbitrary. I was actually once confronted about my future career choice, and it left me feeling a little upset. I was getting a haircut, and this one other patron came over to talk to my cutting-lady. The patron asked me a little about myself, where I go to college and so on. She asked my what I wanted to do with my life, and when I answered 'space science', she immediately launched into a tirade about how useless the space industry is and how we shouldn't be committing to it when nothing good comes of it. She went on to say that we should be spending our money on improving health care and education and the like before we 'waste' valuable resources and time on it.

I'm not trying to sound still bitter about it, since it happened a year ago and all. It's just that this list brought that incident to mind, and it was memorable since it was the first time I'd really encountered opposition to my choice of profession. But seriously, it is reassuring to see a list like this and know that no matter what some people in the general public may think, we do have an impact on the world.
