[ The video clicks on, to show Angela sitting at a table. She has a stack of colorful blocks in front of her, built to resemble a little town. She looks like something's bothering her. She huffs a sigh. ]So, let me get this straight. There isn't a single other person here from Fa'Diel? No one else here has heard about the Mana Goddess? Or the Mana ( Read more... )

[he takes a long while before responding. even then, there's a bit of white noise before he speaks;]

Some have things familiar to them.

Others...are not so lucky, it seems.

Some of the people here seem to be familiar with all the... teck-no-logi there is. Nothing here seems to be powered by mana though, unless I brought it along with me.

Technology.

What is mana?

That, yes.

Mana is the life force of all things in Fa'Diel. It's also the way magic works, usually by channeling it through the elemental spirits. If you're really good, though, you can channel it into things or use it without any help from the spirits... but no one's been that adept in a while.

Sorry. Never heard of any of that.

[ Pauses to think for a bit, then: ]

Some things about this place are familiar, but nobody else from home is here.

I was worried that'd be the case. I never thought I'd actually want to see a sproutling or a dudbear around. At least they'd be something familiar.

Do they have the kind of stuff here in your world? These teck-no-logi things?

What are those?

... yeah. [ Took him a sec to figure out what she meant. ] A lot of the technology is similar, but Sacrosanct's is more... advanced.

Creatures from my world. Sproutlings are pieces of the Mana Tree, and they don't have souls... or they have one big soul, something like that. They're pretty creepy if you think about it. Dudbears are like living stuffed bears, they have their own language. They're kind of creepy too.

Things like lanterns that don't need to be lit with a flame, it's a lot to take in. Let alone the fact that a lot of the things here just... glow. Or blink.

[Billy never thought of it that way before because while he had nobody here that he knew already he was having an excellent adventure and that was okay as long as he could make new friends. He'd always changed gangs back home a lot anyway but...

Now that he's thinking about it. He did miss a few of the familiar hangouts and faces. He never was one to stray too far from familiar territory--even if the law was onto him.]

Don't know anybody here but those I've met in the same position. Had to get used to things, ya know? But it ain't all bad. Some nice people here an' all. Nice things, too.

[He held off for as long as possible, tried not to ask so eagerly but...hell, he's a curious lad.]

What's all that 'mana' stuff? And a rabite? ...I mean, if you don't mind my askin'.

[ She props her chin in one hand. ] So far no one's been outright nasty or tried to kill me, so I guess it's an improvement. Still, I've got things to do in Fa'Diel. People are depending on me.

[ In response to the question, she knocks over the blocks again. And again, they rebuild-- differently this time. ] Well, at its simplest it's magic-- the powers of the elemental spirits, spells, charms, that sort of thing. It's also the life energy of everything in Fa'Diel, connected to the Goddess. Every living creature has mana.

And rabites are blobby biting things. They have rabbit ears and a fuzzy tail, but they're no where near as friendly.

Sorry to hear that. That people are depending on you when you've got no choice, that is.

Magic? [He sounds skeptical but willing to listen. If just for the boyish attractiveness of ~mystical adventure~. Plus, that's kind of a neat trick but it could be some sort of technology for all he knows.] Like what kind of magic? Can you show me?

...well that's just odd.

Well, it's not a great situation, but it's my responsibility. Mother can't leave her people behind, so it's in my hands.

[ She smiles a little at that. Angela never misses an opportunity to show off. ] Well, there are eight elemental spirits, I know spells for six of them.

[ She cups her hands and after a moment of concentration, a ball of fire pops up, hovering over her palms. ] This is one of Salamander's spells.

What's Fa'Diel like?

And I'm sort of alone.

According to one guy I talked to, it's full of miracles.

It's... well. There's a lot more plants there, for one. Big plants, too, not the shrimpy trees and stuff here. And fewer humans-- we're pretty rare in comparison, actually. There are a lot more beastmen and plantpeople and animals and Jumi just... other creatures. And centaurs, but thank Goddess we don't have those here.

No one else here from your world?

Oh, that actually sounds like a video game!

Um... well, sort of. They are here, but they're the opposite gender.

[ That... causes Angela to pause a moment. ] They're... that happens here?!

Many species believe in higher beings, thousands from hundreds of planets. I've yet to see one, I'm not holding my breath.

This deep in space I don't think anything can see us but ourselves.
