Skins 6.02 comments
I'm not actually a week behind, but I forgot to post this. I'm watching 6.03 "Alex" today.
So the new Alex character comes in next episode, and this week the writers have DARED TO BE DIFFERENT. No, no, they’re still killing a member of the main cast, again, in a way that once again feels contrived (this little Skins quirk only truly works the first time, with Gen 1) . But this time it’s not the second to last episode! OH MY, I AM THROWN ALL IN A TIZZY.
When we open the episode, though, I’m desperately wishing it could be Alo. Because he’s being a self-involved prick.

Rich leaving messages on her phone is so sweet, but man is this episode so much more of a bummer when you realize he’s hallucinating the whole time.
Awww, the “love of my life” exchange with the nurse is still absolutely precious NOTHING CAN TAKE THAT AWAY FROM ME.
But ok so Rich was actually trying to do it with Grace’s unconscious body? LOLOLOLOL. THIS SHOW. Why do I have the feeling that this entire episode exists because someone thought that would be really hilarious? (Not that I don’t completely understand that line of thinking.)
The whole “it’s just young love, it’s not real” bit with the mum is a perfect Skins track to explore, because with all of its foibles Skins is about that initial journey into adulthood, where everything feels dramatic and dizzying, and you begin to become aware of your mortality, and realize that the authority figures and adults surrounding you don’t actually have any more of the answers than you do… And the Rich/Grace subplot has been set up as a good exploration of the “first love” experience. It’s the sweetest, purest “young love” couple that’s been on the show, so it’s natural for this to be where Skins plays this out - the idea of if you can have real fidelity in young love, if it’s truly “real” or if it just feels real to you right now. That’s why I’m predicting that this subplot will end with either Rich moving on & putting Grace behind him at the end of the series, or Rich actually committing suicide as discussed here.

And then Alo and Mini ruin the beautiful bb Grace montage with their sex sounds. CAN YOU FIND NO WHERE ELSE FOR YOUR BOINKING? INAPPROPRIATE, PEOPLE. VERY INAPPROPRIATE.
Rich is being a judgey, slut-shaming prick but on the other hand I do get the extreme rage about them doing this in GRACE’S HOUSE while he’s having a complete mental breakdown about her. It’s like, dude, the fact that this house is empty is due to Grace being in a fucking coma. Not really something you should be celebrating with sexytimez.
And I gotta love how he’s like, “secret? whatever. THIS IS NOT ON THE LIST OF THINGS I CARE ABOUT RIGHT NOW.”
And then they start up again? I’d toss ‘em out the window at that point, tbh.
And THEN Alo continues to be a self-absorbed twat. Even for a teenager, this is just a bit much. The random chick in their band is pretty awesome, tho.
Rich & Liv are cute friends and they should always eat buscuits together, all the time.
Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I am actually warming up to Rider this season. God, this is like the Sean Parker syndrome. He’s such a bizarre, useless human being that eventually I just kind of want to hug him and pat his head as he grins & says inane things to people.
Per usual, Skins’ house parties are like no house parties I’ve ever been to. I’m trying to care about the Mini/Alo thing, but sorry I’m still hung up on how they eliminated the most interesting parts of Mini’s character. Now she’s cool with making out with strangers. okaaaaaaaay.
awww and then Alo is holding Rich as he loses it and my heart gets all squishy for a bit.
Hallucination!Grace is absolutely gorgeous. Being dead apparently does great things for your skin. wow.

Very moving scene between Mr Blood and Rich. Makes up for some of the less stellar bits in the episode.
