Icon joy!

Thanks to everyone who sent me birthday wishes on Tuesday. I had a nice day which involved intermittent chocolate cheesecake. I decided not to do anything in particular to celebrate this year since I still haven't entirely recovered from celebrating my last two birthdays on climbing trips. Note to self: 1. Climbing boys are evil. 2. Coronas with unexpected added shots of chilli tequila are fun but lead to epic hangovers. 3. Never go out drinking when you have a journey to the airport which goes through mountains with many hairpin bends the next morning.

Oh dear, I've had a particularly bad week as far as getting work done goes. Had to go to my supervisor meeting yesterday and admit that I hadn't completed everything that I planned to.

But afterwards I had lunch with innerbrat which was lovely. We talked about comics and the awesome toys that our parents made for us when we were kids. Mum! I don't think I have thanked you enough for the Sindy furniture made from wooden clothes pegs and the My Little Pony stables made from lovingly painted cardboard. I am very sorry if I was ever ungrateful enough to wish I had the "real" (i.e. fake plasticy) versions.

Contributions to the lack of work productiveness are the twin distractions of Star Trek fanfic and icon making. But it isn't all bad because I entered an icon making contest at beinghumanstill and came third and won best colour last week. And then while writing this post I've just discovered that I came first this week!!!!!! Which is awesome! I think I've got the hang of this icon making thing now. Go and have a look at the icons, there are some gorgeous ones there. And then vote for the challenge next week.

I'll be posting those icons, the Star Trek: Reboot and Where the Wild Things Are icons that I've been working on shortly.

It has been interesting making the Star Trek icons as they have a very different colour palette to Supernatural. I'm also bemoaning the lack of decent screencaps. Most of the images I've been working on come from the trailers and promotional stills which mean that everyone is using the same images over and over again. I can't wait until the DVD comes out!

My biggest issue at the moment is about using text in the icons. I think I've got the basics of placement and matching the appropriate font to the icon. It is just the choice of text. Every time I think I've got something clever or interesting I come across the same thing on my f-list and I start to wonder if I have just remembered it subconsciously. What is the deal about that with icon making circles? I've come across people who have been upset if icons are too similar but sometimes it is inescapable. Particularly with the limited images available at the moment and the obvious text choice for certain images. I guess all that matters is that you aren't deliberately copying.

Oh dear! I may have just joined the icontest trek_challenge! Because I really need more of an excuse to make icons of Kirk, Uhura and McCoy. Aaargh! I just noticed that one of the participants is an absolutely fantastic icon maker that I have been fan-girling for ages! Oops!

I've been wanting a "Let the wild rumpus start" icon for a long time (also a T-shirt) so I was filled with glee when I saw the trailer for the Where the Wild Things Are film. It looks absolutely beautiful. It is very different to the atmosphere of the book which is dreamlike in a slightly darker scary way. So I HAD to make icons.

I also had a go at making desktop images for my laptop. I haven't had a fannish desktop image since I bought this laptop because I take it to the office. However I have been spending so much of my time working at home that it actually seems worth it. Chris Pine and Karl Urban are very nice to look at. If I'm going to continue I'll need to find some larger textures to play with first and it is very strange to be thinking big. Much less room for mistakes.

star trek:reboot, icontests, icons:i take icons way too seriously, being human, my life, climbing, birthdays, where the wild things are
