【Hetalia】 lyrics: My Friend ／ Kyou o Tanoshimou ze

And now for something completely different. It's been too long since I did anything Hetalia related, and they've been releasing a whole new set of chara image songs for the new Beautiful World series (which the animation style actually matches how Himaruya actually draws!). So I was asked to translated England's new songs, "My Friend" and "Let's Enjoy Today!" As most Hetalia songs have ever gone for me when I translate them, these two were likewise incredibly straightforward. And I learned a whole bunch of new mythological creatures from the British Isles that I'd never even heard of before! Heck, the list in the song "My Friend" covers folklore from most ever corner of the islands, so that was fun to look at (descriptions and notes for both songs will be found beneath their respective lyrics). And speaking of notes, I didn't put one down for Stonehenge; I trust you will already know about it. It's one of those quirky little tourist sites that everyone pretty much knows about even if you've never been anywhere near the UK. Also, I remember seeing on my quest to find out what "postprandial pudding" was that even someone from the UK had no idea what it was supposed to be! And I kept getting links related to glucose levels, so... I tried looking up just "postprandial" on Dictionary.com--the note explains the rest.

Notes:

1. Brownie - (Scottish/Northern English) Brownies are said to inhabit houses and aid in tasks around the house. However, they do not like to be seen and will only work at night, traditionally in exchange for small gifts of food, especially favoring porridge and honey.
2. Pixie - (Celtic) In traditional regional lore, pixies are generally benign, mischievous, short of stature and attractively childlike. They are fond of dancing and gather outdoors in huge numbers to dance, or sometimes wrestle, through the night.
3. Unicorn - In European folklore, the unicorn is often depicted as a white horselike or goatlike animal with a long horn and cloven hooves (and sometimes a goat's beard). It was commonly described as an extremely wild woodland creature, a symbol of purity and grace, which could only be captured by a virgin. Its horn was said to have the power to render poisoned water potable and to heal sickness.
4. Oberon - King of the faeries, best known as a character from William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
5. Clurichaun - (Irish) Similar to a leprechaun, only surlier and almost always drunk.
6. Knucker - (Sussex) A kind of water dragon.
7. Spriggan - (Cornish) Spriggans were depicted as grotesquely ugly, and were said to be found at old ruins and barrows guarding buried treasure and generally acting as fairy bodyguards. They were also said to be busy thieves. Though usually small, they had the ability to swell to enormous size (they were sometimes speculated to be the ghosts of the old giants).
8. Coblynau - Coblynau are mythical gnome-like creatures that are said to haunt the mines and quarries of Wales. They are said to be half a yard (1.5 ft) tall, and very ugly. They work constantly but never finish their task, and are said to be able to cause rockslides.
9. Dunnie - (Anglo-Scottish) A small, Brownie-like being, the Dunnie has been known to take the form of a horse in order to trick a rider into mounting him before disappearing and leaving them in the muddiest part of the road. He also is said to disguise as plough-horses only to vanish when the ploughman takes him into the stalls.
10. Robin Goodfellow - Also known as “Puck,” a mischievous nature sprite/faerie. Also well known from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
11. Apple Tree Man - The Apple Tree Man oversees the blossoming and ripening of the fruit, ensuring a good crop; he is said to carry treasure with him, though shy and timid, he will quickly depart for another orchard, taking his treasure with him if disturbed.
12. Green Man - The Green Man is a jovial but wild figure tied to nature worship and fertility rights. He is a spirit of trees, nature and foliage. The Green Man is usually represented as a face peering from foliage; leaves for hair and beard, vines sometimes sprouting from his nose and ears. When he is depicted as a man, he is covered by leaves and vines, his skin the same green hue as the foliage which engulfs him.
13. Daoine Sidhe - (Irish/Scottish) They are variously said to be the ancestors, the spirits of nature, or goddesses and gods. They are said to live underground in fairy mounds, across the western sea, or in an invisible world that coexists with the world of humans.
14. Gwraig - It is considered that the Welsh Otherworld of Annwn can be reached beneath the surface of certain lakes. Here, in their submerged towns and villages, dwell the Gwraig, stunning golden-haired Faerie maidens. They may be seen walking upon the surface, floating beneath the water or otherwise sailing in small golden boats. (Similar to the Lady of the Lake from Arthurian legend)
15. Leprechaun - A type of fairy in Irish folklore, usually taking the form of an old man, clad in a red or green coat, who enjoys partaking in mischief. The Leprechauns spend all their time busily making shoes, and store away all their coins in a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If ever captured by a human, the Leprechaun has the magical power to grant three wishes in exchange for their release.
16. Tom Thumb - A character of English folklore, Tom is no bigger than his father's thumb, and his adventures include being swallowed by a cow, tangling with giants, and becoming a favorite of King Arthur. Tom is also cited as one of the supernatural folk employed by servant maids to frighten children. Said to have magical powers.
17. The phrase invoked here, "hoata," is some sort of battle cry or something of the like often shouted when delivering the final blow (or in this case, signaling the casting of magic to turn England into the Britannia Angel, which as far as I can tell is a thing only in the Hetalia series)
