I totally just figured out what's been bothering me with that phrase, "Things that can't be explained by science/philosophy/David Bowie/etc." People use it like, "hey, there are things that can't be explained in this world" so that means that magic/mysticism/God/psychic powers/etc must exist!
...but...uhm. Isn't THAT in and of itself an EXPLANATION? ~_~
This is in addition to the fact that just because we can't explain it RIGHT THIS SECOND it doesn't mean it cannot be explained AT ALL. After all, we used to not be able to explain how people got sick. Now we know all sorts of things about the immune system, germs, bacteria, viruses, etc. It's a part of the argument I have with, just because *I* don't know how a DVD player works on a deep level, or how to explain nuclear physics, that doesn't mean there isn't ANY explanation at all. It just means that *I* don't know...yet.
I just think the entire use of "unexplained" events as a support for any of the arguments for things like God, spirits, ghosts, prayer, David Bowie, etc, is a logical fallacy of epic proportions. Not knowing a scientific explanation for something does NOT give someone the right to just "make up" what they think is the explanation. You can't say, "We don't know why things that sleep dream," and then conclude, ah! Since this is 'unexplained' it must mean that when we sleep, our inner brains visit other worlds created by David Bowie, as his way of giving us incentives to sleep, since we have to sleep. Oh, and we have to sleep because we were once all a part of a giant sleeping clam, and we all retain part of that need to sleep, even as we fight constantly to be awake.
If it's unexplained, then it's unexplained by EVERYTHING. Otherwise, you're just offering up theories and guesses. u_u
