disclaimer: not true, all product of my imagination.
Dom leaned over the railing, staring at his reflection in the water without really seeing it. In one hand, he held a cigarette that was burned almost to the filter, while he idly flicked a lighter on and off with his other hand. He brought the cigarette to his lips for one last drag, then tossed it into the water before lighting a new one.
He heard Billy’s footsteps long before Billy finally joined him at the railing; Dom didn’t react, just continued to stare down at the water. He slid his hand over and Billy plucked the newly-lit cigarette from his fingers. Without a word, Billy dropped it into the lake. Dom casually lit up another.
This time, Billy took it right out of his mouth, but he didn’t immediately throw it away. Instead, he held it gingerly between his thumb and forefinger, as if it would burn him. Dom took another cigarette from the dwindling pack, preparing to light it if Billy tossed this latest one.
“You shouldn’t smoke,” Billy said quietly.
Dom shrugged and flicked his lighter. “Like you don’t, sometimes.”
Mirroring Dom’s offhand shrug, Billy took a quick drag on the cigarette. “Ever hear that saying, Dom? ‘Do what I say, not what I do.’ You shouldn’t smoke and neither should I.” With that, Billy stubbed out the cigarette and flicked it into the water.
Dom turned his shoulders away from Billy, facing the horizon again. “Is that supposed to be some sort of metaphor?”
“I dunno. Is it?”
“You should know. You gave me almost the same speech two months ago. I get it, Bill. You don’t have to keep on like this.”
“Remind me.”
“You remember.” Dom sighed. “Let me have a fucking smoke.”
“What did I tell you?”
“Can we not talk about this?”
“I told you that you shouldn’t fuck around, and that I shouldn’t take it seriously.”
“Bill-” Dom’s head dropped to his hands. “You said I shouldn’t love you.”
“I never said that,” Billy objected fiercely.
“As good as did.”
His body vibrating with tension, Dom fumbled for the pack of cigarettes, which he’d slid into his pocket. In the process, he dropped his lighter. Billy bent down to pick it up. He flicked it on and held the flame out for Dom to light up.
“Thanks,” Dom muttered, still not meeting Billy’s eyes.
“Dommeh.”
After a few seconds of calculated silence, Dom raised his head.
“Maybe I was wrong, then.”
Dom blew a cloud of smoke out toward the water and the moonlight. They both turned to watch it dissipate. A long moment later, Dom turned back and studied Billy’s profile.
“What does that mean?” he whispered.
“It means I want you back,” Billy replied without looking at Dom, his voice equally soft. “It means I’m sorry for ruining what we had.”
“It isn’t ruined,” Dom interrupted. Then, “Can I kiss you?”
Finally, Billy turned, the beginnings of a smirk playing at his lips. “If you put out the cigarette.”
Dom tossed the whole pack into the water.
