So I wrote the following 10 Reasons why I love Yuri on Ice back on September 7 and as you can see, never finished it, and life has gotten busy and I've since watched more sports anime so I'm leaving it as is, but before I leave you to read why I LOVE YURI ON ICE BEYONDS REASON, I have to let you know that I've finished Kuroko no Basket since then, and uh, yeah... I actually think Kuroko no Basket is the best anime ever. OMG, I LOVE KUROKO NO BASKET. I have a Kuroko No Basket wallpaper with Kaijo High versus Seirin High on my desktop. I cannot get over how emotional I got over basketball. BASKETBALL. High school basketball. OMG, I was a complete mess by the last season. I got my heart ripped and cried fangirl tears over a high school basketball game between my two favourite high school team (I didn't want either one to lose *WAILS*). It was fabulous. I actually called my niece who was a fan of Kuroko no Basket when she was in college and we fangirled over it for a good half hour. I'll have to make 10 reasons why Kuroko no Basket is EVERYTHING (but let's be serious, I probably won't. BUT KUROKO NO BASKET IS EVERYTHING!)
Anyways, watching Haikyuu now, and it's fabulous too. Dammit, sports anime, you're killing it with me. You almost make me want to play sports. In my forties. With arthritis. And volleyball was the one sport I hated above everything else, but I must actually be getting into sports because I actually want to see more volleyball plays and matches than I want to see boys loving each other *GASP*
How the mighty have fallen. I've gone from loving one set of balls to well, perferring a literal set of balls. Dammit, Kuroko no Basket, you actually made me care about the actual sport! Now I get excited when I hear "interhigh preliminaries." They mentioned inter high preliminaries in Haikyuu and I went nuts because it means I'm going to get to see teenage boys duke it out with each other, and I'm actually looking forward to the actual games and competition. I don't understand what happened...
All right, back to Haikyuu and fangirling over spikes and blocks and receives (I KNOW, I KNOW, WTF!) and here's my ten kind of unfinished reasons for why I love Yuri on Ice <3
1. IT'S THE GREATEST LOVE STORY EVER! I don't know how many times I sat there watching the series with both hands over my mouth while I squealed or breathed heavily or went, "oh my god, oh my god, this is so sweet and romantic and their love is SO SO TRUE!" because the romance between Victor and Yuri was like the most heartfelt thing ever and I can't even, I JUST CAN'T EVEN. And it feels real. Their love doesn't feel like it's shoehorned into for fangirls to squeal over (though do we still ever!) but it actually feels like two real people who really do care for each other. It's feels genuine and realistic and so beautifully heartfelt.
2. I LOVE YURIO! (not to be mistaken with Yuri in #1. I will get to him in #3) OMG, I LOVE YURIO! Someone said he was like an angry cinnamon bun that needs to be protected and I'm like, YES, MY PRECIOUS YURIO IS INDEED AN ANGRY CINNAMON BUN THAT NEEDS TO BE LOVED! He has such an attitude and he's sarcastic and hot tempered and easily offended and bullheaded and demanding and when everyone else is moved to tears he's all, "shut up shut up shut up!" (I LOVE THAT SCENE!) but inside, he has THE SQUISHIEST center! I looooooooooooooooooooooove Yurio! I mostly love easy it is to set him off, which is probably why the other characters gets so much joy setting him off LOL. If there's anyone who will always take the bait, it's Yurio and I just love him for it. I love my precious little hot tempered Yurio. I want to spend the rest of my life chasing after him while he runs away yelling, "get away from you old hag!" and I'll be like, "Yurio! You sweet precious thing!" and he'll be like, "Don't call me that stupid nick name!" It'll be grand :D
3. I LOVE YURI! Yuri is basically me XD He's insecure, he's anxious, he over apologizes, he gets embarassed easily - awww, he's my spirit animal, but ten times sexier LOL. I love how "normal" he is, with very human emotions I don't often see in fiction - they really nailed the anxiety in away that felt so very relatable to my anxiety-proned ass - but at the same time, he's so believably extraordinary and awesome. You can see why Victor fell for him as hard as he did :D Plus his passion for food and ice skating and his friends with the other skaters (and Victor!) is adorable. But my favourite thing about Yuri is similar to that of Yurio - it's so easy to set him off too LOL. While Yurio loses his temper and cusses the universe (which cracks me up), Yuri gets flustered and embarassed and horrified and "oh no, oh no, oh no!" and that BEYOND CRACKS ME UP. I think heaven for me would be setting Yurio off into a rage while setting Yuri off into horrified cries of "I just want to crawl under a rock and die!"
4. So I have two characters who I love setting off, there must a character who's good at setting them of and that brings me to I LOVE VICTOR! It's so awesome seeing him all cheerful and calm smiles while he sets Yurio off into rages and being equally cheerful and calm smiles while he say stuff that makes Yuri go "oh my god oh my god oh my god!" in horror and embarrassment and extra apologies. I LOVE VICTOR. But more than just the way he sets those two off, he's just so smooth and focused and so very, very, VERY hot. He's clearly cultured, with great taste in music and art *swooon*, dresses beautifully, has a confidence that's oh so hot, but he's also TON of fun, and he clearly loves those who are close to him. Also, he sleeps with his dog. And that whistle he gave Yuri *hearts stop* He's one of those few characters that can be seductive without being corny. I just love this man.
5. THE MUSIC IS SUBLIME. Oh my god, the opening is definitely in my top 3 anime opening, possibly #1. When I first watched it by itself, it didn't do much for us, but in context with the show, it's PERFECT. The animation is gorgeous, the use of colours and watercolours is inspired, the music itself fills me with emotion each time I see. I find myself singing, "...this in this moment of truth, we were born to make history!" with that tingly feeling in my heart. It's one of those OP I never skipped. The rest of the soundtrack is just as amazing. The music to Yuri's free skate is GORGEOUS. It brings tears to my eyes each time I hear it, and the ending music fills you with the right amount of bounce and inspiration. And the songs the skaters skate to are lovely. I love how much classical music and showtune-like music is in the series, but my favourite is JJ's theme song. I have it on repeat and I'm such a nerd I'm trying to learn all the words so I can sing with it when I watch his scenes skating to it XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
6. The animation is gorgeous! I love the colours, I love how they animate the setting and how the different countries come across. (The Christmas market was so beautiful!) And man, animating those skating routines must have taken A LOT of work. I can't imagine the budget that went into it. It looked flawless.
7. I LOVE THE OTHER SKATERS! They were so cute ( or so much fun (swiss) or so intense (Uzbetazan)
8. I just have to say, as a Canadian, I love that the most arrogant of the skaters was Canadian. I love JJ, right from the beginning. He was such a ham <3 JJ style, HELL YES.
9. I love how I felt represented as a fangirl through Yuri's sister and dance teacher friend in episode 10 when they were at the dinner tables with all those boys on boys couples crying a pool of tears. I love the English dub for having Yuri say, "way to play it cool, girls." as they sobbed and sobbed, because OMG, THAT WAS SO ME, SO ME THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE SERIES. I was them, weeping pools of fangirl joy at my table. Especially at the airport scene which you'll know when you see it, or when they exchanged rings, or when they jumped into each other's arms at the end of Yuri's performances. There was a constant fangirl puddle of tears by my laptop and it SO AWESOME to see that represented in that scene <3 X 1000000000000000000000000
10. Dub and subs are equally good.
