It was at times like these that Sam really missed Bobby. "One thing at a time" he would say, "Ya gotta prioritize first and then you tackle one thing at a time." So that's exactly what Sam set out to do. At that particular moment, the highest priority was finding out what was going on with Dean, and Crowley wasn't talking as long as Dean was threatening to kill him while they were handcuffed to each other inside the devil’s trap. So, Sam and Cas thought at this point, if Dean was a demon, he probably didn't know how to disappear yet, so in order to get Crowley to talk, Sam released Dean from the demon cuffs and broke the devil's trap just long enough to let him out, and then sealed Crowley back in.

“Alright Crowley, start talking!” Sam demanded.

"You’re making a mistake Moose.” Crowley said, “You should have kept HIM sealed inside this trap.”

Dean angrily said, “Quite whining and start TALKING!”

“Ok fine, as I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted, I didn't KNOW this was going to happen, that's the truth. It was just an old demon's tale! But as the story goes, Cain tried to take his own life with the First Blade many, many years ago. But the Mark, and the Blade didn’t want to let Cain go, and together, they brought him back to life."

"What do you mean they 'didn't want to let him go?’” Sam asked, “The Mark, and the Blade, they're just 'things' Crowley, they don't WANT anything!"

"On the contrary Sam, the Mark was created by Lucifer himself, it was born from the very essence of evil. Combine that with the blood of those that have been killed by the First Blade, the blood the Blade has consumed for hundreds of years, and evil indeed begins to have a mind of its own!"

Crowley continued, "I'm sure you noticed Dean wasn't sleeping much, if at all, but it wasn’t until I had noticed that he wasn't eating that I started to suspect what was really happening. So, when the time came, I sat alone with your dead brother lying in his bed, and I tested the tale and put the First Blade in his hand. The Mark and the Blade did the rest; they brought your brother back as you see him today."

And there it was, silence enveloped the room as the truth hung in the air like a dense fog. No one said a word, each trying to process what they had just heard, until finally, resigned to the horror of it all, Dean asked, "So that's why I can see your real face? Because… I'm a..." but he couldn't say it. This was his worst fear, and exactly what had given him nightmares years before, and now, that nightmare has come true.

"Yes Dean, you're a demon now." Crowley said, "That's why I said they couldn't exorcise you, because you're not possessed Dean, you just ARE!" Crowley waited for another response, but getting none he said, "Oh for crying out loud, at least you're alive! Well, sort of. I should at least get credit for that!"

Hearing that, Sam’s silence turned to rage as he pulled out the demon knife from behind his back and began moving towards Crowley, "Credit? You think you deserve CREDIT?!"

Cas grabbed Sam’s arm and pulled him away. "Sam, I can't let you kill him for the same reason I couldn't let Dean do it earlier. He may be the only one that can help undo this."

Dean then spoke up again and asked Crowley, "What about the glow? What’s that about?"

"Hellfire," Crowley explained, "Your demon eyes see the light of hellfire now."

Still stunned at what they were learning about Dean’s current existence, Sam looked to Cas, and then to Dean, but then had to look away. HOW could this have happened to DEAN? It should have been HIM he thought. As early as six months old he was bred for this as Azazel fed HIM his demon blood, and then HE developed psychic powers as a result of it. Sam’s mind was racing now remembering that as an adult, HE was the one that was addicted to demon blood, and then, drunk with the power it gave him, HE killed Lilith and set the apocalypse in motion. HE was Lucifer's vessel, and HE said yes! Wanting so badly to lift this burden from his brother he thought if anyone was meant to be a demon, it had to have been HIM!

On the other hand, Sam's mind continued, although Dean was supposed to be Michael's vessel, Dean said no! Dean was the good son, always following their father's orders. Dean raised Sam, he usually made the right choices, and even when he didn't, the choice he made was almost always for the right reasons. This shouldn't be happening to HIM! All those times Dean could have given up on Sam, SHOULD have given up on Sam! Like when Sam chose Ruby over Dean, or when he wouldn't give up the demon blood or stop using the powers it gave him. When he didn't search for Dean while he was in Purgatory, and when he told his brother he wouldn't try to save him if he were dying! For all the times Dean didn't give up on him, he would be damned if he was going to give up on Dean now! Sam vowed to himself right then and there, he was going to save his big brother, one way or another! There was nothing he wouldn't do to get his big brother back!

On the opposite side of the spectrum, Dean's mind was completely numb. He figured he'd had about all he could take and was ready to switch gears, "Cas? Sam? How about we head into the other room for a bit, hmm?"

Crowley protested, "Guys? GUYS! You're just gonna leave me here? Oh Come ON! I told you everything I know! We're in this together now guys!" he said as his voice began to fade behind the closed bookcase doors.

Dean was the first to speak, "Ok, next order of business is Cas."

Unable to move past what had just happened in the other room Sam asked, "Don't you think we should finish talking about YOUR business?"

Dean responded by saying, "It seems to me there's not much else to discuss at this point. I'M DEAD SAM! So until we can figure out what to do about that, as much as I hate it, there doesn't seem to be much else we can do about it right now. Cas on the other hand, may be the one shot we have at healing what Metatron did to me, but it looks like his lights are almost out too, am I right Cas?"

"I'm afraid so Dean." Cas then told them everything that had happened in heaven before he left.

"Wait a minute! After all that, you mean to tell me, Metatron is still BREATHING?!" Dean felt the mark begin to burn again. This time however, he closed his eyes so his brother and his friend wouldn't recoil from him after seeing them turn black. This was going to be SO hard, he thought.

"You have to understand Dean, so many of our kind have died! The killing has to stop somewhere." Cas replied.

"Fine, it can stop right after HE'S dead!" Dean replied.

Sam then turned to Cas and asked, "Do you think there's any chance of getting your mojo back?"

"I honestly don't know Sam. We haven't had a chance to interrogate Metatron yet."

After expressing his eagerness to interrogate Metatron himself, Dean figured that just wasn't going to happen. The angels were never going to let him into heaven in his current condition, nor would they let Metatron come to him. Or would they? They've certainly needed his "expertise" before! But Dean also realized there was no way he was going to get what he wanted unless the angels came to him, he just needed to bide his time until then.

"Alright Cas, I know you'll do the best you can, but when you and the God Squad can't get what you want out of him, you make sure they know my price when they come asking for my help!"

"And what would that be Dean?" Cas asked.

Dean looked Cas straight in the eyes and said, "I'll get what you want out of him Cas. I'll find out about your grace and I'll find out how to open the gates of heaven again. Hell, I'll even find out how to get your wings back!" Then the room started to glow as Dean's eyes narrowed and turned pitch black. "But make no mistake about it Cas, once I'm in the same room with that sonofabitch, he will NOT be walking out alive!"

Cas nodded, and in an instant, Dean had disappeared.
