Does a suit really make that much of a difference?

In hold ‘em, the general rule of thumb is that being dealt a suited hand (i.e. two cards of the same suit) gives you a three percent edge over the same hand unsuited. Surfing over to Kevin Drum's blog at Mother Jones, I saw he'd excerpted an article from the New Yorker. George Packer had written a brief story about how the economic downturn was affecting the contractor fixing his roof.
