Having been shunned by trick-or-treaters during Halloween last year, I was prepared to be disappointed again. But there were witches in the streets as I walked home yesterday and I even heard some kids chorussing "trick or treat" on my estate. After living in countries where trick or treating wasn't done, I was rather looking forward to having kids in costume coming round last night. I used to go trick or treating when I was little but the scare stories about poisoned lollies etc. reached as far as New Zealand and the custom fell out of favour. I was quite surprised to see how popular Halloween is in France. I didn't see any trick or treaters this year but the shops had gone to a lot of trouble over their decorations. Even non-obvious places like the optician's had done up their window.
