Lee (Fireflies) - I can't believe he's doing this song. It's soooo overplayed. Well...it wasn't as good as the past two weeks. His voice sounded a little shaky and "closed" if that makes sense. Eh, it's still probably better than what the other guys will do.
Alex ( Trouble) - I'm really hoping that he'll be good this week. He's got the week 2 tone rather than week 1, which is a good sign. Wow, that was a good performance! I'm really rooting for him now. That was pretty spot on, pitch-wise. And he had lots of emotion showing. I agree with Ellen (not the banana stuff) - he does ooze sweetness.
Tim Urban (Halleluah) - OK, when I heard he was doing this, I groaned. It's not turning out as bad as I'd imagined though. His voice is actually sounding much stronger. Wow, way better than I expected. That was, kinda, good! Awww...he's also really sweet. Am I just a big sucker?
(Mat sez: That was the first performance I've heard this season that hasn't had pitch problems)
Andrew (Genie in a Bottle) - Smart song choice, this is exactly what they wanted him to do. I don't think it was anything super-fabulous, but I think it probably did the trick. It did sound best at the end, if he had sung like that the whole song, I think it would have gone over much better. (Mat sez: I hope he wins so he can do an entire album of covers of female pop stars)
Casey - What's up with the acoustic guitars tonight, dawg? He sounds pretty good, and comfortable. Didn't wow me, but it was definitely better than last week.
Aaron (I'm Already There) - Started out kind shaky. He seemed really nervous and had trouble finding the pitch. Once he stood up and started belting, it was better. His voice was still pretty shaky. Also, his movements were kind of awkward. Oh SNAPZ, Simon laid the smack down on Kara! Aaron's sweet, too.
Todrick (Somebody to Love) - Queen, really??? Oh god...the beginning was SHITTEOUS. What's up with the jumbotron of the backup singers. OK, it did get better...but I think it might be too little too late. I agree with Simon - it was good in parts.
Big Mike (Woman's Word) - I cannot believe that falsetto came out of him. I'm likin' it. He's got a lot of soul, that guy. I though it was great. (Mat sez: Wow, that guy's got a voice on him, huh?) Oh Kara, stop making this about you. I think Mike proved that he really does have talent and not just the "everyman" appeal.
They all kinda stepped it up tonight. I was very surprised. Just like the girls, some of the ones I expected to be the best weren't, and some of the ones who I assumed would be trainwrecks also weren't. I really don't know who's going home tomorrow. I'm worried about Lee, to be honest. He's been solid the past couple weeks, and was just so-so tonight. And he went first. I also have a strange feeling that everyone who was pity voting for Tim won't vote tonight, and he'll ironically be voted off after his first good performance.
Rankings:
1. Big Mike
2. Tim (WTF???)
3. Alex
4. Casey
5. Todrick
6. Aaron
7. Andrew
8. Lee
Actually, after ranking them, I really have no idea who will be going home. Tonight was kinda crazy. Also, while Big Mike and Tim are solid in 1 and 2, I think I could easily change most of the others around if I thought about it differently. This should be interesting.
