Hello rarely and irregularly updated livejournal world. 2009 was a good year - I did well in my classes, knocked out some research and spent time strengthening my bonds with friends. I changed research topics, moved offices, but happily kept my adviser. I transitioned from mostly going to class to mostly doing research and for the first time grades weren't the top priority. I was a little discouraged at the slow pace of research, but that's how it goes. My classmates always cheered me up though, and we all went to a lot of sporting events and held a lot of BBQs together.
What's up in 2010? I'm looking for a new apartment right now - I'm not that into my new landlords and their getting-any-kind-of-response-or-acknowledgement-from-us-will-be-like-pulling-teeth attitude, and I want to live in a neighborhood that has a gas station and a grocery store (Eastlake is kinda... small). I think I found a place today - it's bigger than I need and correspondingly a little more expensive than I planned, but at the same time it's the first place I've seen that hasn't been overpriced for what you get, and it's managed by the very nice landlady and not a big management company. Better to have a little more space than I need and pay a high yet manageable rent, than have too little or too grungy space and be paying more than it's worth. That's how I feel, anyway. It's a ground floor unit, so I worry a little about security, but Wallingford is a safe neighborhood and light timers do wonders at keeping burglars away.
I'm also teaching at the UW for the first time in 2010. Tomorrow is the first session of ATMS 101: Weather which I'm TAing for my adviser. It'll be a nice change from research for a little while. Teaching isn't my favorite activity in the world, but I've been told I'm good at it and there is definitely no lack of stuff to get done when you're a TA.
I'm going to have Mariner's season tickets in 2010! Chris, Tyler, Bryce and I have seats in right field, just behind Ichiro, for 16 games. I'm really excited - I stopped following baseball for a while in college, but I missed it and Safeco is a great field. The Mariners are really loading up right now so it's going to be an exciting season.
SO I'm still loving Seattle even though 2009 was a busy, tiring year. If you're a friend that I've lost touch with, drop me a line! One thing that doesn't change from year to year is getting in touch with old friends :)
