Well, last week I went to open up LiveJournal and post as (somewhat) usual, when I put in the address and the usual scary "THIS SITE PROHIBITED" screen of fear came up, with a scare warning from the USAID office of security. The justification was that it is a social networking/blogging site. These blockages used to be for porn, now they use them for every possible site that could be construed as linking you to the outside world in some way. I am not sure why Facebook is still on there, but I'm not holding my breath it will stay that way.
Yeah, yeah, we are federal employees and so what are doing wasting valuable taxpayer dollars blogging and socializing online? Well, how about lunch breaks? How about 12 hour days that need a little mental relaxation somewhere in between meetings, drafting memos, and fighting off jackass? Why can smokers go outside for 15 minutes, 3 times a day and perform "social networking" while slowly committing suicide, yet the rest of us are banned from such interaction? Why can the coffee drinkers walk over to Starbucks for a half hour in the afternoon and not be threatend by the office of security? Where are the rights of the socially inept, who prefer their chitchat in bytes and avatars?
