A stitch, a twist in the chest that cuts off his breath comes in the middle of night. Dazai’s eyes blink open from a restless sleep, pain radiating as he gasps for air that seems not to show his lungs any mercy. The red scar gleams under the bandages and his wrist burns like pure fire upon his skin. His heart twinges again.
Why?
He can hear it loud and clear, he knew it would come soon. Chuuya’s voice is a broken whisper inside his mind, a gentle touch that scratches deeper than any knife and hurts like an open, fresh wound.
Why?
Dazai tries to climb out of the musty mattress he found for himself for the night, after the long run away from Yokohama, away from Port mafia. His legs fail him. He falls back on the bed with another stab that makes him clench his teeth and bite back a whine of pain.
Was it just me, then?
Dazai curses under his breath. He can feel it all. The suffering, the sorrow. A sense of abandonment for being left behind - again, as he always did, says Chuuya’s heart. Most of all, Dazai feels the utter betrayal. Years of work together all of a sudden don’t mean anything anymore. All is left is a bleeding trust that won’t heal any time soon.
Was it all a lie?
Dazai hated it. This connection, this bond that let them share pain and feelings. He loathed every moment of it. He didn’t need another patched heart to deal with.
He didn’t need something that made the two of them just more vulnerable.
«I’m sorry» he whispers, an apology that for sure can’t reach the other.
He crouches back under the sheets, knowing that Chuuya will crying himself to sleep tonight.
