LOST "Ab Aeterno"

I see lj has changed its top banner to spring.

I've already seen it twice (yay! for canceled classes), but I could watch the Island Richard, Smokey and Jacob scenes again and again. So much information woven within those scenes.

Best to start at the beginning... Ben's little remarks at the campfire had me laughing. I really can't wait till Jack sees Smokey!John in the flesh (?)

Was anyone all that upset that 1867!Richard killed the Doctor (by accident)? Guy was a dick. It did make me think that nearly everyone Jacob has an interest in has killed before (or managed to do so on the Island; see: Sun, John, Jack, etc.) Which just reminded me of another theory that I'll forget if I don't write it down now.

Jacob says that Smokey is malevolence/evil, right, and he must be contained by the Island or "we all go to hell". Smokey may be imprisoned, but Jacob isn't completely free either, not so much that he can remain off-Island for long, it seems. Is he more free than Smokey, really? He seems so, but Smokey can get off-Island as an apparition, does so frequently (thinking of Christian to Jack, what with the smoke alarm going off in his office).  He definitely has the power on the Island, but he's also not free of sin, just more subtle about it.

Case in point: I don't think leaving a ship full of survivors (or just Richard, even) to rot is particularly charitable. Richard would have died of dehydration had Smokey not come to his rescue (and did he revive him, a la Jacob with Locke? He placed his hand on him in a way suggestive of that scene from the finale, so...) I suppose Smokey judged them all and Richard was the only one truly regretful of his actions, but still, killing an entire ship of humans by bringing them to your Island (and allowing most to be slaughtered), Jacob, seems a bit much.

Smokey appeared as Isabella ran from the ship; they were both there at  the same moment. Either Smokey can be both things at once, or that wasn't Smokey. Now, I was under the impression that Smokey could only appear as those who have died and whose bodies were on the Island. Maybe Jacob can appear as ghosts of those who have died off-Island, or apparitions of those he needs to influence others (Claire and Walt to influence Kate and Locke). Or it was Smokey all the time :shrugs: Maybe his powers were stronger before he lost his MIB form.

Until Richard smacked him in the face with the fact that Smokey will always talk to them first if Jacob sits around doing nothing, the deity appeared completely oblivious to this incredibly obvious fact. Did he actually think Smokey would leave them alone?? Why would he do that, just 'cause he doesn't like them? What else is he going to do, argue impotently with you? Really, Jacob seemed like a complete moron there. I suppose he could just be bitter about the game as well, just not so vocal about it, but he doesn't stop playing. And with his "they're all dead" line, the strength of his argument is a bit decreased, if every time he brings someone to the Island they get "corrupted" and are killed. Again, a lot of people have died to not prove your point? =\ Winning once does not justify the sacrifice of so many, Jacob.

And seriously, Smokey gave Richard the exact same directions and made the same remarks as Dogen did when instructing Sayid to kill Smokey. Evidence for the one entity split in two, I think (that and the fact MIB still doesn't have a name). Maybe Jacob is darkness as well and must be contained by having an adversary always willing to meet him, or keep him occupied. Hmm.

I would have liked to see Richard join Smokey's team, but you knew Jacob wasn't going to let his prize representative free (which is why Smokey!John didn't make a move towards him as he shouted to change sides). I wanted to see more of the Smokey/Richard dynamic. Oh well. But as to how he's going to stop Smokey...maybe by somehow figuring out who the new Jacob should be (without everyone else having to die)? (Does seem that douchey Jacob and douchey Jack are a great match (the beach scene with Richard was a great example in that he was a jerk, nice, then a smug jerk again. It was fun to watch, but I wouldn't have want to deal with that for 150 years.) Hurley's too nice to be in charge of the Island, really. But who will be Smokey, then? Or will this ridiculous game continue forever, the Island the deities own personal laboratory environment with as many variables controlled for as they can? 'Cause really, by keeping Smokey imprisoned, if he really is as bad as you say, Jacob, you're only keeping yourself from being proved wrong or right about humans. I really doubt it could get worse in this world (or that his powers - which apparently you gave/forced onto him in exchange for his humanity - will work off-Island).

Does anybody else get a little more depressed each time during the preview the announcer says "only X episodes left"? You must, right? Sun/Jin ep next week. Will they ever be less than half-an-Island's walk from each other? :sighs:

lost, theorizing, team smokey regardless, television
