18 in 30 - LADWP and you

So we get into our new apartment and everything is just peachy. We move all the furniture in, spend the night, wake up in the morning and take showers (in our respective bathrooms, separately and at different times).

This is when we realize that, with their insane amount of generosity, the LADWP has installed FREE showerheads in all the showers! Wow! How awesome is that!

Except the LADWP think that if you install low flow showerheads (less the 2 Gallons per minute) it will result in less water wastage!

Here's some news for you LADWP, it wastes more. An average shower lasts me 8 minutes or so. An LADWP low flow shower takes me 12 minutes, because I can't get the damn shampoo out of my hair and can't feel clean anywhere due to there being no waterpressure.

Apparently LADWP can't do basic math. Most normal showerheads regulate water at around 2.5 GPM to 3.5 GPM.

Assuming an average of 3 GPM, my 8 minute showers took up 24 gallons of water (which, did I mention, I pay for?).

The LADWP showers take up... 24 gallons of water! Wow! The exact same amount of water, and I'm uncomfortable to boot! Thanks LADWP!

To spite them, I went out to bed bath and beyond and bought a new showerhead that made a point of saying that while it's regulated at 2.5 GPM- you can take the filter out and just get raw water pressure. I liked that idea.

I also got one with multifunction and the massager and the like (Inok of course wants a detachable one.. but that's because she's too short to reach the showerhead, and because she wants to move the shower-nozzle.. places)

I got home, removed the old LADWP showerhead (but of course I'm keeping it to reinstall when I leave, God help me if my next apartment has a low flow showerhead!), removed the restricter from the new one, and let it flow let it flow let it flow.

I estimate I'm now wasting 33% more water, and I have LADWP's conservation efforts to thank for it.

Sometimes, you just gotta let people be people.. and wash their hair in decently pressurized water.
