Would love my flist's opinions here. I'm trying to pare down my syllabus so that I can get to the Civil War in my US to 1877 class. I usually only get the secession of Fort Sumter, but I'd like to get all the way to Lincoln's assassination. I assigned a book on the Civil War, so it's a must on the syllabus. If I do that, something has to go. The Mesoamerican/Spanish Conquest portion is at the beginning of the semester if I use it, and it's the main sticking point on my syllabus. Some focus on it like whoa, and others cut it for time.
