Well I have seen this meme going around, and given what a TV addict I am I couldn't resist doing it myself when I finally had time! This is my first 30 day meme, let's see if I can keep up...

Day 1: A show that should never have been canceled:
While there have been several great shows I love that were canceled too soon (Firefly, Dollhouse, Tru Calling, etc), for me Moonlight takes the cake, especially since it should not have been canceled both for content/quality AND practicality reasons. Because while it wasn’t a ratings heavy hitter to be sure, 5-7 million at least every week on a Friday night is pretty damn good (even if not good enough for stupid CBS), and it was winning among the coveted 18-49 demo every week in its timeslot (what more do you want?!). CBS said they wanted more women viewers, and it was a show that definitely attracted that. It had won a People’s Choice Award for best new show (which is why CBS hosting the PCA this past year angered me so much, since they themselves think so little of it!).
After the writer’s strike (which screwed with viewing for ALL shows), it only lost 2% viewing audience, as opposed to say 15% or more for many other shows. This, the PCA win and the steady ratings all indicate just what a loyal viewing base the show had, which no doubt would have been expanded in the future given a little time. It was also a show about vampires, when the Great Vampire Craze had already begun, which CBS could have capitalized on (which is why it irritates me when articles or whatever act like it just missed the Craze-it didn’t, CBS just didn’t care!)-considering the popularity of shows like True Blood and Vampire Diaries, and the release of the Twilight movies, more people probably would have checked out CBS’s current vampire show, had it been marketed right over the summer.
Considering all of these factors, and the fact that Joel Silver and others remained so positive about the shows chances (telling the actors not to look for new work for the next year), the cancellation also came as a big and horrible shock to me an many other fans. With Moonlight, I actually actively campaigned to save the show, writing and mailing out a bunch of postcards, calling constantly (NBC and CW are still in my contacts list on my phone from this time, lol), making posts about ways to help to spread awareness, sending emails and feedback messages on websites, contributing a little money for ads, etc. For weeks the efforts to save Moonlight occupied my thoughts constantly.
Then there is the quality of the show itself, which was so excellent by the end. Yes, it had a slow start, and I still can barely make it through the pilot, it’s so bad (when I show ML to friends I never begin with the pilot!). But things soon picked up, making for quite an exciting and intriguing storyline that was then cut short. With a unique and fascinating universe (I loved the secret vampire society akin to say the Wizarding World), a wonderful cast of characters (especially Josef, but also including more minor characters like the vampire who works at the morgue, or Logan the basement geek vampire), fantastic music (in part written by the wonderfully talented Trevor Morris), an interesting story, and great writing, this show was so enjoyable, and had SO much potential-it had only barely started getting into the swing of things, when it got canceled.
For a while it emotionally pained me just to think of Moonlight, knowing that lost potential, what the show could have been, that my favorite show was now off the air already. Especially when you look at the plans for what would have happened next season, which involved for instance Josef and Mick having to flee to NYC (and be roommates perhaps? Lol), it’s clear the writers had far from run out of fresh and interesting ideas, and it’s just such a shame that they could never play these ideas out. Last summer I watched the whole series twice within a month with two different friends (who both loved it btw), and I still loved it both times, not tiring of it at all!
So in short, this TV show should never have been canceled, and its cancellation definitely hit me harder than most! :( I actually gave up tickets to see “Jersey Boys” to stay home and watch the finale, once I realized it’d probably be the last live ML epp I’d ever see, and I don’t regret this decision for a minute. And I still hate and boycott CBS to this day for it…
