hey guys! This is the best time of my life. I feel like I am growing in so many ways. My mind is being completely expanded and stretched in ways i NEVER thought possible. Yesterday, Winter and I decided to go running. We went for like a 2K jog(4 miles) and when we got to the place in the road to turn into the school, we decided to go for a walk and just explore the small villages around. So we are walking along this small dirt road in shorts(im surprised we didnt get stoned) and passing small houses/huts of some sort. As we are walking EVERYONE is staring at us. They we yelling "OLYOTYA MZUNGU"(hello white person) and waving and smiling. There are SO many little kids, some clothed, some not, just staring wide eyed. It was amazing. It got to a point where they would yell to the other houses that mzungu's were coming and people would be waiting outside their houses by the road. Little kids would giggle and point. We came to this house and there were about 12 little kids on the corner. They were trying to speak to us but we dont speak Lugandan well and they didnt speak english. So we said hello and smiled and then the little boy put his hands on his head. i didnt know what to say/do so I just did the same. The kids thought it was the funniest thing EVER and so i just started mimicking everything this little boy did. Eventually his mum came out to see what was going out and she spoke english. We started talking to her and she said "they want to touch you. you are new to them. They have never seen mzungu." so i put out my hand and most of them ran away until one came up and shook it. They all started to touch us and shake our hands etc... it was amazing. The mother said "you make them so happy. come back?" and we said "yes, we will come back. maybe tomorrow?" and they said that they would wait for us. it was so cute. We decided to head back so we turned around and realized that there was a fork in the road and we didnt know which way we came. We started one way and it looked very wrong so we went back and tried the other way. People were lining the street and little kids all wanted to touch us. Everyone was waving. It was like a mzungu parade haha. As we were walking, i stopped to talk to some kids and they bowed. THEY FREAKING BOWED TO ME. ahhh i was so overcome. They said "thank you, thank you for talking to us, thank you" i was so boggled. I had NO idea what to do. ahhh it was CRAZY. It turned out that we did go the wrong way and so our "little walk" turned into a 3 hour journey. it was okay though. we got lost but ugandans are so nice that it really didnt matter. Today we went and sat in on a GP class. (GP= general papers) it is basically just like a language arts class. it was awesome. We decided to come into town today and eat dinner here. It is a lot nicer to eat in the city because we can eat any food we want. We usually get indian food but i donno. its awesome. We got driven into the city and then got boda-bodas to this internet cafe. In attempt to save money, we double up on the boda-bodas. To give you a picture:
we are in uganda. There are very few mzungus here. Boda-bodas are very small mo-peds. We double up. This means, 2 mzungus and a ugandan driver on this thing.
so anyway, kiersten and i were sharing and the boda-boda ran out of petrol(gas) on a hill. ahhh it was so funny. We had to get off and the driver was blowing into the gasket. this happened twice on the way up here. it was really funny.
On another note, i am just really encouraged being here. I feel like this is an awesome time in my life to be doing this and i am being really challenged here and its amazing.
I put on Outcast roses today for the girls to see if they would like it. They all screamed and said "this is on the countdown!!!" it was soo funny. It is amazing to me how americanized things are. Dont get me wrong, there is no running water or electricty. The fact that they had heard our music was astonishing to me though. I guess its understandable because there are TVs in restaurants and stuff. oh well, i guess thats it. I am doing well, sore from my run, but well. I really want to know about people school etc... but i love everyone and will see you around thanksgiving if my plans work out!
