Two years ago I started keeping track of the books I read over the course of a year, on librarything. I was shocked at the end of 2008 to see how much re-reading of books I do, instead of reading new things. I finally read the Da Vinci Code over the last two days, and in general I'm unimpressed. The writing is so-so, basically on par with the better works of Michael Crichton. Anyone who relies on phrases like "So-and-so didn't know that 4 hours from now, his whole world would be changed" needs to go back to writing class. He's also way too fond of ( Read more... )

Finished Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman today. It's a quick, light read that is definitely enjoyable. It doesn't necessary have the depth or impact of his other novels (American Gods, Neverwhere), but that's okay. It's a good yarn, with interesting characters and bits of folklore/mythology tossed around expertly. It reads like one of his short ( Read more... )

In other news, I finished the first book of the new year. It was This Day All Gods Die by Stephen R. Donaldson. It's the final book in the 5-volume Gap Cycle. The Gap Cycle...is hard core. It deals with: rape, murder, suicide, genetic mutation, non-consensual cyborgization, war, aliens, betrayal, and singularity grenades. It is very raw and ( Read more... )
