It's hard to believe that I skated roller derby over 5 years ago. Back then I was 235 and in great shape.
Now I have the opportunity to skate in a mens league, but there's a lot to be done before I'm even competitive. I went to my first practice yesterday and while I've gotten older and fatter, the team has gotten stronger, faster, and more adept.
I didn't even participate in team drills and I was worn out afterwards, but it's given me a goal. I need to lose over 30 pounds to be able to move like I did, then I need to lose another 20 to be close to where I was.
This time around there's no spoofing - the guys are serious. I'll be 39 in less than a month so this is probably my last hurrah with any team sport, but I'm so excited. I had to get Ashley's buy-in first, but she knows anything that will help me become more active is a great thing.
Today I was sore, but I was looking at better skates online, looking at what off-skate exercises I can do to get my conditioning back up.
Everybody will want to know my "derby name" sooner than later, and honestly, I don't care. I don't want some gimicky schtick - Sharc is who I am: a DJ, a geek, and a roller derby skater. I could be true to form and come up with another name so my other friends will know how they know me. Bucky, Barney, and Sharc help Ashley identify how people know me.
I plan to blog about my road to my first match. I weighed 301 today. My short-term goal is to be at 280 by the end of December.
