art is hard

So Andy Warhol's "Liz" painting(or perhaps it's a silkscreen) just sold for 23.7 million. I can't imagine ever getting that much for a piece of art. I guess a previous owner of this piece was Hugh Grant, but he only paid around 5 million for it. I am quite baffled these days at how art sells and how it assumes such diverse pricing. Something you deem crap could be viewed by another person as priceless. I went to my drawing teacher's art opening at his gallery this past friday and was amazed to see that he sold a painting for $11,000. Amazing. It gave me some hope for my future. Perhaps I will never see 20 million or so, but geeze 11,000 is a lot of money.
On the subject of art, I just answered a craigslist posting looking for an artist to paint a portrait of their friends dog. HA. I can't turn my nose at much these days. It's money and experience. On a humorous note a drawing I did for a co-worker two years back or so, was turned into a tattoo! Really, you can only laugh. When I did the piece, it was really a favor and I wasn't too thrilled about the subject matter (dolphins with a setting sun:) Well, my mom ran into the lady a week ago and they were chatting about me and the lady mentioned the dolphin drawing, and then she proceeds to say,"as a matter of fact, I liked it so much, I got it tattooed on my back!" and then she showed my mom! Pretty funny. I don't think it will go on my resume however. I do hope to one day do commissions I have some pride in, or at least like. Holly, your piece I feel is going to be awesome.
