In 2017, Hip Pop culture has first dipped their toes into the main stream thanks to the talent show, Rap China. Can you believe that the local rappers are getting huge following which could rival those of the so-called "Bandwidths"?
Since talent show are so popular in China, the spectators have voiced their biggest wish, a talent show for actors and actresses. Zhejiang TV received the signal, so Birth of An Actor is on screen right now, every Saturday at 10 PM.
Recommended by Zhang Guoli, judged by an fixed panel of 3, Zhang Ziyi, Liu Ye and Song Dandan, 3 groups of actors and actresses perform on stage every episode. Every group will produce one winner based on their quality of performance as rated by the 3 judges, 10 producers and 300 audience. The winners will advance to the second round to challenge the judges.
The fun is always in the first round, when actors and actresses challenge each other with assigned scripts. Sometimes, they get the chance to choose script; sometimes, they can only choose roles. The actors and actresses will politely bite each other's head off to get their ways. They all mention the reason -- We could make a concession in everything except drama.
In the show, young and old, veterans and inexperienced, men and women, even the judges themselves, collide with each other furiously, in terms of acting, voice, scripts, aesthetic standards, performance ethics...After the broadcast, the viewers also release their opinions via weibo, douban and all sorts of platforms.
Generally speaking, actors and actresses graduated from top artistic universities are having an edge over who are not. But it is not always the case. Sometimes, the votes are not reasonable, so the judges and the producers will be grilled for a few days online.
The show is nicknamed as Birth of an Attention Whore.
Some short plays are actually quite good, when both sides are contributing to the play.

Zhai and Yu are both amazing in the section. Zhai won, but I prefer Yu.
陶虹彭昱畅《末代皇后》
This is the top of all performances given in the second round, because Tao Hong shines like a diamond as the tragic last empress of China, a hallucinating Wan Rong.
蓝盈莹凌潇肃《最爱》
This is the favourite of many viewers, replaying a segment of a film played by Zhang Ziyi and Aaron Kwok. The film is about HIV victims through selling their blood.
